Crush. Easier and faster. If I was building an A1 or SP1 clone I'd use a peel just because thats what was used at that time.

I had my first run-in with a crush washer last night when installing a new 16" Superlight. No way I could get the damn thing to start crushing with any reasonable amount of force, so I used a peel.
Better the devil you know. |

You couldn't get it to time within 15-20lbs as described in the USMC TM? It doesn't crush much at all by the way. |

There are some crush washers out there that do not crush. If you get to 20 ft lbs and there is no give it's time to get rid of that one.

Pop it out, put it on a flat surface, and hammer it a bit until it starts to deform. Sometimes it takes a lot of force to start deforming them, then they start crushing normally.

It may sound trivial, but I like the finished look of the peel washer better. It worked well for years but does take some "fiddle" to get right.

I went to the crush washer on all my new projects that need an A2 flash suppresser. The Vortex doesn't need a washer at all.

I had one that wouldn't crush at all, even in a vice with far more pressure than could have been necessary.
I filed it down with a set of files and smoothed the filed surface, shot some paint on it to cover the bare area and it indexed just fine. Hit and miss but worked out in the end. |

With the A1 and earlier FH, it didn't matter what ended up on the bottom or top, but the A2 FH is made so that you "kick up less dust" when you fire, but it probably also provides a little (VERY little) downward thrust through directing the flash upward and outward. |

Here's a real n00b question for y'all. Where the heck do I find a crush washer? My gun store here doesn't have one unless I buy it with a flash hider, which I already have (a 4 slot Phantom). Is it possible to buy something like this at a hardware store like Menards or True Value?

If your phantom doesnt have the solid A2 llike bottom. you proably can use a reg split washer.

Yea a 1/2" split washer will work fine. You can also buy beveled washers that don't have the split in them. |

Supply the suppressor with the gun, and the shop can time it for you too since it's already in the lathe, that way there are no washers required.

American Manufacturing Triple X Warrior come standard with crush washers... They work and do not loosen up even with heavy usage. mark [email protected] |

For new Vortexes (Vorteci?), yes that's correct. For older ones, YMMV. I screwed the older Vortex as far in as it would go, but there was still about an 1/8" gap. I put the LMT's original washer back in to fill up the gap.
