I know this has been discussed in the past but I thought I would share.

Stopped by at my LGS today and spotted this dusty looking AR-15 on the wall.  Come to find out it's a DPMS security contractor (SOC LLC) rifle from Iraq.  I've heard of these rifles about 3 years ago when they start selling these to the general public.  This is probably my only chance to own a firearm that has been a part of a recent major conflict.  So for $440 out the door I thought it was not a bad deal.  I know it's an entry level rifle (not the best brand either) but I bought it due to its history and I like worn look.
I also like the fact that it has the bull barrel (HBAR),  came with a well-worn sling, 1 mag, and best of all has the previous operator name on the buttstock – I thought that added more character to the rifle.  I wish it still had the property tag on it but you can still see the residue of it on the right side. The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp.  The bolt and the carrier were surprisingly clean and has minimal wear.   Looks like this was carried a lot but barely shot.
I immediately took it to the range after purchasing it --- lubed it (this thing was bone dry) and fired 3 full mags without any issues.  Ran great but the iron sights might be off a little, so next range time I will get it sighted in.  This would make a nice truck or a loaner gun -- no worries on getting it dirty or scratched.

I wouldn't have thought twice about buying that either. It's a cool piece and one of the few ways to get something (legally) from a recent conflict.

No, no dreams killed here.  I knew these were Ugandan's  from previous research and the name on the buttstock confirmed it.

Why the hell did they get DPMS? That's... Eugh. Especially with the HBAR, why'd they bother with that?

Anyway, sterilize it with acetone/CLP. Run, shoot, chug, and have fun with it.

Please let me know if you had any bad experiences with DPMS rifles --- just trying to understand the negative vibe.  Folks that bought these contractor's rifle are extremely pleased with their performance and I have the same positive experience   I know some LE have used DPMS rifles in the past or maybe still to this day.

Don't sweat it OP.  You scored a cool find in my opinion.  Like you said, it's got character and a cool history.  My first AR was a DPMS and I never had any issues out of it.  Ran it through several carbine courses.  I've since passed it on to a new shooter and moved on to other things, but for what you paid you made a good score and it would certainly make a good truck gun or something to pack in the woods.

Congrats!

They're good to go brother. DPMS used to put out a lot of out of spec parts back in the day but they've since fixed their issues. Everything I've owned from them has been rock solid, minus 1 old out of spec charging handle

Never did see any AR's in their hands myself, just 87 different AK variants.

I got a DPMS Iraqi bring-back a few years ago and I've had exactly zero issues with it. It's reliable and as accurate as it needs to be. Mine is an AP4 model with an M4 profile barrel. I've replaced the furniture, improved the trigger and added an Aimpoint PRO since this pic was taken. I wouldn't have put the money into it if I didn't think it was a good rifle.

Kind of cool. Plus for $400 it makes a good plinker, backup rifle to give your neighbor or family member for SHTF or just spare parts.
