I notice that it lists 4140 for Armalite's barrels.  I e-mailed their Tech Department and asked if their barrels are 4140 or 4150 and Tim Rooker e-mailed me back the following response:

They are chrome moly vanadium.

That would be CMV and as such would not be 4140 unless I am missing something (which is probably the case).

The "Chart" is way over rated

Well I agree that The Chart is indeed overated with respect to people's need to only possess firearms that conform with certain specifications on it but isn't the Chart itself accurate with respect to the information listed thereon?

4140, 4150, CMV, magic metal, ribbed for her pleasure.........you won't tell the difference over the life of the barrel.

I know and for the benefit of you and all future posters, I understand that neither I nor anyone else will be able to tell the difference.

Now that we have established that, is The Chart wrong or is it not wrong?

I don't think we have ever settled if CMV can also be called 4150.

I didn't know that.  The Chart lists 4140 for Armalite though.  Do you know if it was ever settled that CMV can also be called 4140?

Maybe you could start one more thread about this; and be obnoxious in all three of them.

The above link is interesting.  See page 3 for the three qualifying compositions of barrel steel.  I don't think that 4140 qualifies.

It falls behind and gets updated as manufacturer's practices change, but is for the most part accurate.  It's a good reference.  It's worth is relative to your preferences.

Anyway, here's the sauce:

Originally posted by triaged at calguns.net:

If you look at the AISI spec's for 4140 and 4150 you will see that neither of them have Vanadium in them. The Vanadium comes from a Mil-Spec for barrel steel

AISI 4140 (0.38-0.43% Carbon)

http://www.matweb.com/search/DataShe...e661079bf35b61

AISI 4150 (0.48-0.53% Carbon)

Mil-B-11595E CMV barrel Steel (0.41-0.49% Carbon + 0.20-0.30% Vanadium)

http://www.everyspec.com/MIL-SPECS/M...T-1.014405.PDF

As you can see the CMV barrel steel overlaps and falls between 4140 and 4150 in terms of carbon content. AFAIK there isn't an AISI spec for this CMV steel so people call it all sorts of stuff. Some people call it 41v45 which I makes some sense to me.

This thread has some more info in it.

The "Chart(s)" can be biased and inaccurate.
Do your own research.

I agree. It doesn't even have Vulcan on there, and those are the machineguns of the special forces. Who knows what else they intentionally left out?

do not underestimate Vulcan.

they were recently bailed out by the Obama administration.  they will now be made through a green process, and will fire only non lethal rounds.  When you pull the trigger, a small speaker on the front of the receiver will recite Miranda rights in 52 languages.

Thank you.  I seriously don't understand why ANY mention of The Chart has to lead to such silliness.

I take the info included in The Chart with the caveat that it's evolving and was created by humans.  It's not the word of God, but I'm not going to slam it or those who use it as a guide.  It's ONE data point that I use to help me make judgments and decisions and in the end, if I end up mixing and matching or buying something from the right side of the chart or something that may be superior to the standard (6920), that's my choice.  I'm not going to slam it since its authors are not claiming to be THE FINAL WORD on what YOU must purchase.  Just one more data point.  I think the thread on M4C or even in the GoogleDocs version of the chart even have some message to this effect.  Sheesh.

Don't hate.  Appreciate!
