I know some of you have had the same questions I had, so I've been digging in a little to get the answers. After some calls, emails and IMs, I've come up with the "process flow" of how the SS Direct program is currently working in the paper application world we're living in.
1. Purchase the silencer(s) of your choice from Silencer Shop. (Don't forget the tax stamp, and make sure you provide them your trust/corp documentation as well). If you're buying from out-of-state, the $270 will include your tax stamp and a preset transfer fee which SS will pay the local dealer. You'll get an email fairly quickly as an order confirmation and giving you the serial number. It'll look similar to this: 2. In the next day or three, you'll get an email letting you know all your paperwork has been reviewed and is "queued for submission". Don't be confused thinking it's EForms again. They're able to fax the F3 to the ATF, which is usually done in the next 24-48 hours. The email will look similar to this: 3. At some point between F3 being filed and F4 being submitted, you'll get an email letting you know the paperwork for your F4 is ready to go pending F3 approval. I'm not sure what triggers this email, as this example came on 7/15 for a 6/2 F3 submission. I guess I'll see how soon the shipment and check cashing emails come for this example. Anyway, the email looks like this: 4. The next email you'll get will be a shipment confirmation with tracking info, letting you know the silencer is being shipped to your local dealer. This will indicate a couple things: (1) your F3 was recently approved and (2) F4 will be filed in the near future if it wasn't already done that day. ETA: be aware that just because your suppressor hasn't shipped to local dealer doesn't mean F4 hasn't been filed. For example, they're currently backed up on shipping. My F3 was approved ~6/10 and F4 was filed 6/14...but second can hasn't shipped as of 6/26 (update: shipped on 6/30). Email will look like this: Note: there is not a separate email for F3 approval. You'll know it was approved when you get the shipment email. 5. The next email will be confirmation that the payment for your tax stamp was processed by the NFA branch. Based on the trends at the time of this post, that means you "should" have a Pending date in the next week or two. You can check the ATF Wait Times page to get an idea of how long F3 & F4 approvals are taking (you can also check NFA Tracker to see how long it's taking to go from check cashing to Pending on recent submissions). This will be the first time the ATF will have any record of the serial number for you to call and check for status. Email will look like this: Note: when you call the NFA branch for an update, your local dealer is the transferor...not Silencer Shop. When asked for serial number, I usually say "ABC1235, transferring to Lastname Living Trust through Local Shop Name". 6. The final email will be notification that your F4 has been approved. This email will come from Silencer Shop as well. At that point, you'll need to make the arrangement with your local dealer to pick up your suppressor(s). That's really the only dealing you'll need to have with the local shop, unless you go there for a conjugal visit with your can. The email will look like this Based on a Q&A on Page 2, this is not correct. The approved forms will go directly to the local dealer, and that dealer is who will notify you that the approved forms/stamps have been received.: PLACEHOLDER FOR SCREEN SHOT I know those emails aren't from the same order, but they're the ones I had handy to take screen shots from. I'll update this with the other emails as I receive them. I hope that by sharing this, I can ease some of your concerns and clarify some of your expectations. (And more importantly, allow SS employees to stay busy getting paperwork filed instead of answering these same questions through email/IM/calls ) |

Thank you very much OP!
Now I know to just wait a month or so for the Form 3 to be approved before I will receive another e-mail. I do wish they could send one out stating it was submitted but this will work. |

Well...I just used this service and could be any happier. Just purchased a spectre 2. All I need now is have a 1 week form 3 approval and a 1 week form 4 approval. Thanks again and thanks to BW for this write up and making my decision easier in choosing a .22 can.

SS makes this process dangerously easy. So tough for me to not spend all of my money.

SS makes this process dangerously easy. So tough for me to not spend all of my money. View Quote Process was easy to get started, but I will say it has been a little confusing (thus the write-up) and has not gone as smoothly as I expected. I've had to request updates multiple times. I had two F3s (filed 2 days apart in April) approved by 6/10. One shipped out on 6/11, and the other has yet to ship (same trust, same dealer). Asked about it a day or so ago and was told it "should" ship this coming week...which puts it at least 2 weeks after the first one. Not sure if they've sold so many they can't keep up with it or what. Was also told at one point that the F3 & F4 were filed at the same time...which isn't the case. Pleased with the price, and not having to deal with anybody but SS until it's time to pick up the cans...but I'll readily admit it's not as fluid as I expected from them. Although...I'll say none of the confusion around my SS Direct orders bothers me near as much as the fact SiCo hasn't released the YHM Mount for the Saker I paid for. |
|
Since joining the NFA game last year, my patience has grown tremendously. I'm not so concerned with updates as I understand that the process is long. So now I just fill my time shopping for more toys. That way each month I get a new approval is like a sweet surprise.
As far as the confusing process goes, I think that is more a fault of the NFA itself. I'm not sure how it could be improved other than a nice Walkthrough such as you have provided. Finally, I think the ATF frowns on dealers filing the F3 and F4 at the same time. Although I do know some dealers who do this still. |

Added a note about shipping email vs Form 4 in step #3 based on my experience.

Quick update. Good start to Independence Day. I received two emails from SS at 12:00am, stating the checks were cashed on 6/30. I'll add a screenshot tomorrow when I fire up the laptop. So, ~2 weeks from F4 filing to check cashing, and then 4 days before SS notified me. I'll wait until next Fri to check for a Pending date. Hoping the trend is continuing that Pending dates are within a week to 10 days from check cashing.

I had a form 4 submitted by SS on June 10th (I presume because they shipped my can to a local SOT that day) & I haven't heard anything since. I find it hard to believe a check still hasn't been cashed. I've sent an email asking on Friday but haven't heard yet. I don't understand why this information can't be made available online. Cryptic emails about paperwork being queued or tracking info to my local SOT really doesn't matter. I just want simple dates, when forms 3/4 are submitted and when the check is cashed. I'd rather not have to ask via email like I had to about when my F3 was submitted |

Is there a list of dealers that they are set up with already? Some dealers may feel like their toes are being stepped on if I approach them myself?

Well, after numerous emails to find out the status of my 2 SS Direct orders, my fears were confirmed... By the time I got a response it was that my form 4's had just been submitted (last week)... That's a full month from when the first order's form 3 was approved and silencer shipped to local SOT. I honestly don't care about the reason/excuse for that, I'm just ticked I had badger them w/ so many emails like some kind of investigative reporter to get the damn info/truth and I have suspicions that it was my emails that prompted the forms to finally get submitted, who knows how long it may have gone on like that had I not been persistent. So far, not so good. I recall reading something about how the whole thing was the "easiest" or "simple", "period".. Not so much. |

My first two SSD purchases have gone Pending. To give you an idea of current timeframes, here's what I have:
Item: Saker 7.62 Purchased: 4/18 F3 faxed: 4/22 F4 mailed: 6/14 Check cashed: 6/30 Pending: 7/24 Item: Octane 9 HD 2 Purchased: 4/23 F3 faxed: 4/24 F4 mailed: 6/14 Check cashed: 6/30 Pending: 7/24 Item: Spectre II Purchased: 6/2/14 F3 faxed: ?? probably 6/2 or 6/3 ?? F4 mailed: 7/21 Check cashed: 8/4 Pending: 8/4 I'm holding to my prediction that any paper form with a Pending date by the end of July gets it back by 12/31/14. With EForms down for F3/F4, additional examiners, and the statement by NFA branch that focus will be put on paper forms, I'm going to remain optimistic. The Spectre II might get a Pending date by the end of August...so who knows. Also bought a Warlock II locally, and check was cashed 7/17, that one will be interesting to track. ETA 10/23: added check cashed and pending dates to Spectre II |

Great thread, very helpful. I recommend contacting SS to verify they have a local SSD dealer before purchasing as the have no participating dealers in my area.

So just to make sure I fully understand. I completed my full SSD purchase on a specter II. When my form 3 is approved, SS directly sends my form 4 to the ATF? I watched the video process (how to buy a suppressor) and it showed forms being hard mailed to my home where I had to sign it, then send it on to the ATF. If they do submit directly for me, how do the sign the form 4? I am using a SS trust.
Thanks in advance! |

One question for SS...I think I asked before about being notified of my F4 approval when using SSD. I thought that notice comes from SS. However, when I look at my F4s, the local dealer's info is the transferor (as it should be).
Do the F4s actually come back to you? Or go to the local dealer? Just wondering if there's a wait in having to have SS mail the form to the local dealer. Or, if they local dealer gets the approved form and they're the one that notifies SS, who then notifies me? With two forms mailed on 6/14, and the ATF Wait Times page showing 5/20-7/31 today, I may be close to needing to know how this all works at the time of approval. |
|
Very good question. The approved form 4 goes to the FFL in your state. They will notify you when it is approved.
SSD was designed for e-forms since most FFL didn't want to or have the resources to use the system. If the e-form system was still up then we would be sending you a notice that it was approved and sending you a copy of the approved form 4. |
|
Interesting, as that's not what I was told. Maybe it was confusion over the old process (similar to the fact I was initially told the F3 & F4 were filed at the same time).
Looking at my F4s, the only contact info is my mailing address. Did SS forward any additional contact information (phone/email) to the local dealer? |
|
When e-forms went down we didn't know how it was going to affect SSD. With the e-form we were filing together because the form 3 was getting approved so fast. With paper filing it will kick back an error letter if filed at the same time. The FFL does have all of your info and should be in contact with you but feel free to bug them :)
|
|
I updated the OP to correct the info about notification.
Also called the SSD dealer. I have them my email and phone number just in case. They said I'd definitely get a call, as they all gather around the envelopes when they come in to see who it's for. The lady said all the guys in there act like kids in a candy store at Christmas when approvals come in. |

Since this is still an active thread, I wanted to ask SilencerShop this here. Could help those that are wondering that want to go this route as well.
I know the transfer process can't be started until the stamp fee has been paid. So my question is this. Can I purchase the suppressor from you all now and then, say next pay day, pay the stamp fee and trust fee? I'm wanting to get a Ti-Rant 45 while you guys have them on sale, but not sure how long you plan on having them on sale to wait next pay day to pay for it all at once. |

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have when picking out a suppressor, and we’re happy to help! •Pay the $200 NFA tax. Most people just add this into the initial order; but, it can be purchased a bit later if you prefer – and a credit or debit card works just fine. (Remember that we can’t start your Form 4 transfer until the tax stamp has been purchased.) •We’ll email you instructions on how to provide us a copy of your trust (typically email or fax works best). If you’re registering using a corporation, we only need the legal name. If you order online, I'd probably call them or send an email just to clarify your intentions. I'd assume they'll start the F3 immediately, but would want to verify that will happen. |

I've got a suppressor in process right now, but I'm having trouble getting info from the NFA branch. I've called the number several times, given them the serial number, my trust name and have tried using both my local dealer and silencer shop as the transferor but they still say there's nothing in the system. I got the notification email that the check was cashed on 9/29/14 and from everything I've seen the suppressor should be in the system at that point. Is this something to worry about or is there something I'm missing?

View Quote Based on my experience, it's already been done. They got behind on shipping with one of mine, and the F4 was mailed ~2 weeks before the can shipped out. If you ask nicely, they'll send you a copy of the F4 which will have the date on it (so I guess it's either mailed that day or the next, depending on if USPS has already been by. |

Typically we file the form 4 on the same day that the form 3 is approved. Sometimes it even goes out about a week earlier. We try not to file before the form 3 is approved because it can create issues if it gets in their system to early.
