It sounds like it would just hit the adjustable cheek piece. A Dremel should take care of that 1/4" in no time. |

FWIW, I just got mine. Ordered July 2007 and received June 2008.
Thanks Steve & RRA. |

Steve - back in February you wrote, regarding the iron sights issue:
And I didn't see that any more has been posted in the past 5 months. Do you have any more info? I took my LAR to the range and had the same issue with the LAR that I experienced with the BAR-10, using YHM BUIS* (I posted about this in February -- shots are much too high, even with .040 fs post and elevated all the way up). Obviously other sights are working for folks here, but I was hoping based on what you said above that I could use my existing YHM sights. * Part numbers: YHM 9627 front sight + 9680 rear sight |

I hate to sound like an ass. But a realistic time frame????????? I have had 2 on order for close to 3 years.it took less time to put a man on the moon

We've been delivering Mid A4s since January, and at least one of the other models will be phased in quite soon. Some models are going to take longer than others only because of quantity before them within a given model, requested substitutions (which will be filled if and when possible), or that the modle in question is not yet in production but will be shipped in date order withinthat model when they do come into production.
As to the sights...if in doubt, particularly on the first models shipped, , call our Sales/Customer Service Department for a return authorization for the upper half and we can verify that it has the corrected .308 gas block. If the wrong block was used, it would leave your front sight lower than it should be. Also, please note that we have experienced tremendous "diversity" in sight heights-both front and rear-across the various manufacturers. A combination of slightly taller rear sight and slightly shorter front sight will cause a significant issue. Also note that the rear sight settings are very much different with a .308 than they are with a .223. Steve/RRA |

Thank you for the update Steve, I have a Mid A-2 on order and plan on making it look like the Pro-Series TASC on page 6 of your catalog. With the DD Quad Rail of course. That cantilever mount and Electronic-Optics sight should work...Right? Mark
The cantilever probbaly won't work...the handle is significantly longer from front to back, so I don't know if there is enough length on the mount to get from point A to point B. When I get a chance I'll grab one of the A2 test rifles and one of the cantilever mount to see they work together.

Steve,
I'm placing an order tomorrow at the gun shop for an LAR-8 Mid A4. Is there a shipping charge to expect or will that be part of the gun price? Also in the unlikely chance I would need to cancel an order(OBAMA etc.), is there a cancellation fee? Thanks. |
From what I have seen, its going to be one of Cobbs rifles with a bushmaster stamp. |
Ker chow.
Thanks Steve, I appreciate that, Mark |
Lowpass,
There are shipping charges in addition to the cost of the rifle. It's between you and your dealer as to how that is worked out. There is no cancellation fee for a canceled order, as long as it hasn't shipped. Steve/RRA |
I guess that just means that there's no cancellation fee... Oooppssiiee... Slap myself in the mouth, or what...? The devil made me do it, Steve... Forrest |
Smirk now Forrest. Wait until we do start shipping your model, and one very special rifle sits next to my desk for an extra few days.

Forrest, Why is it that some people just have to poke the bear? Groucho |
Just my luck... I didn't even know that Steve was a bear... But that reminds me of a story: A little whimpy guy walks into a bar, then walks up to the bar and looks around... He sees a bunch of big guys sitting at the bar, watching a TV behind the bar... He then bellows out, "I can lick any sonofabitch in the place..." A couple of the big guys get up off their stools and beat the ever-lovin' crap out of the little guy... Laying on the floor in a pool of blood, with his face pulp and his ears half ripped off, the little guy says, "Damn! If I'd known there were any sonofabitches in the place, I'd a kept my mouth shut"... Back to your regularly scheduled program... Forrest |
Note to self:
Don't go to bars or zoos with Forrest. BTW, there's still a space in the safe where the LAR 8 will be living. But, I haven't bugged my good friend Steve about it. Nope. Not me. I know how nice that A4 std will be and how fine it will handle and shoot. It's wonderful lines, smooth warm metal, the satisfying thump to the shoulder when she lights up. The pleasure. Oh, the pure, sensuous feeling of the finger on her yielding trigger............. I gotta leave now. Groucho |
Groucho,
That post was kinda disturbing. Yes, the Std A4 LAR-8s are quite the shooters, and "look" more the part of a "battle rifle" than the Mid A4s do, being much closer in length and weight to the FALs, M1As, etc...I've fired each of the five modles (in one stage of development or another)...and while I did have a Mid A4 (never got it home...a P.D. had tohave one immediately so I gave up mine), when I do put anew order in it will probbaly be the full length A4 (or possibly the varmint). Steve/RRA |
Steve,
Didn't mean to disturb you. I just really like my rifles. Wanna hear my description of my M1A? Back in basic, I had to sleep with my M14 because I didn't clean her well enough. It kinda did something to the way I look at rifles. Groucho |
You know, Steve, you can have more than one... Well, at least so far, anyway... Forrest |
Ah, yes, I remember it well... (Well, actually, I'm lying because we all know about old people's memories, but I'll never admit to that...) I also fondled my M14 during my time in Vietnam... Such experiences do change the way you look at rifles... Forrest |
I am slowly backing away without making eye contact with Forrest or Groucho. Carefully. Very carefully.
Have a great weekend everyone. Steve/RRA |
Pssst..... Forrest, we did it. We made Steve leave. Time to PARTY!! Yeah, party. Aw cripe, I was hoping you remembered what to do when the Cat's away.
Never mind, I'll sit in my chair, watch TV and fall asleep. Groucho BTW, You carried a '14 in Nam? Nice. I carried an M1 THOMPSON. Yeah, it cost me a half case of Jack Black, was heavy, and worked the two times I really needed it. Opps, I'm hijacking another thread. |
I'm still here...just being cautious of you guys.
Groucho...if it makes you feel even older, I was born right around the time you were probably carrying that Thompson. Now you can have a really great weekend. Steve/RRA |
Yup, I did have an M14 while in Vietnam for a couple of tours, from Jan. '68 to Sept. '69. Actually, I also had an M60, so that's what I usually lugged around... I also 'bought' an M3 Grease Gun from an ARVN, who probably stole it from his arms room who probably got it at US taxpayer's expense. What goes around comes around... Boy, what I wouldn't have given for an AR-10 back in those days... Oh, wait, come to think of it, what I wouldn't give for an AR-10 (LAR-8) today... (Just thought that I'd bring the tread hijack back around to where the thread was going before the hijack...) And you have a great weekend too, Steve. Forrest |

Steve. I have placed a standard A2 LAR-8 on reserve that was ordered about a year and a half ago. I would like to have a chrome lined barrel. Is this option available on the first run of standards? If I want to change the initial order will it remove my place in line? |
JIm,
CL is NOT curently an option on the 20" LAR-8s. It isn't available as a substitution or even to be ordered as one at this time. CL mids will be an option within the next few months, but rifle bbls will be a way out. Steve/RRA |
Would it be possible to pre-order a rifle with a chrome-lined barrel? I'd like to get my order in now, but, I definitely want CL.

Steve, any news on the next line starting up?
Thanks, hoping it happens soon, were pushing hunting season......again. |

No news is actually good news in this case. Constructin continues, and since the monsoon season seems to have ended for a while, significant progress is occuring daily.

+10000 take my money damn you!!!!!!! when you begin selling chrome lined rifles, will you sell barrels seperately? or will it be a while before you start selling parts? |
Probably rifles first and eventuall just bbls and bbl assemblies.

No. We'v elearned a lot of things from the LAR-8's announcement to production time lag. We're no ttaking pre-ordrs for much of anything, and we aren't announcin gnew product until it's ready to go. The only announced project (we talked about it for a couple of years, so it falls before the new "rules", is the .40S&W model that will be based on the 9mm platform. It will be out as soon as production limits allow.
Steve/RRA |

Forrest I feel your pain. I have had two 20" standards on order for close to THREE years. For the life of me I can not figure out whats taking so long.Since I orderd I have already bought an Armalite Ar-10 and another FAL. SURE would be nice if SOMEONE could tell us when they will be making the lar-8 standard. because pretty soon we may not be able to buy. So PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE

Gonna ask a really stupid question for all you guys that know a lot more about these than I do:
Have the LAR-8, flat top A4 mid, 16" barrel and having a blast with it. Getting pretty decent with the iron sites and starting to look at scopes, not more than say $300... Is there a setup possible that I can mount the scope high enough that I can use the iron sites when shooting < 100 yds and the scope whn shooting further? Ideas? thoughts/ Steve, Is there a setup that RRA has tested or played with? Thanks |
Not really. A4 uppers were create dto allow the lowest possible mounting of the optic...keeping it as close to and as parallel to the centerline of the bore as possible. Going high enough to clear sights defeats that purpose. Better options might include an Aimpoint or EOTech with a "flip" mounted magnifier and flip up front and rear sights (flip the magnifier to the side and use the irons throughthe non-magnifying red dot sight), or a very low powered variable power optic (maybe 1x-3x) and dialing it all the way dewn to use the irons through it.

Fireof59: what brand of iron sights are you using, both front & rear? |

The rear flip site is a YHM-9680 and the front is YHM-9584. Both are described at the following link:

The ALostyr "drop in" rails do fit the LAR-8 with no modifications.
Would'nt it be great if Rock River made accessories for the Lar-8! Theres a thought. I know Steve will tell me to go get a Snickers bar. |

DO NOT use any handguard without an LAR-8-specific barrel nut on an LAR-8!
The exact disclaimer that appears on our web site and in our catalog is: "Note: The RRA LAR-8 uses a unique receiver thread and barrel nut. No barrel nut (either seperate or as part of a tubular handguard or quad rail handguard) except those made specifically for the RRA LAR-8 should ever be used on an RRA LAR-8 rifle or upper half. While some other barrel nuts may thread onto the LAR-8 upper receiver, the depth of thread is incorrect for use on the RRA LAR-8 and use of such a barrel nut not specifically made for use with the LAR-8 (and identified as such by RRA) may expose the shooter to risk of injury or death." If you have any question as to what is and is not compatible, please contact me at RRA. Do NOT use any barrel nut not made specifically for the LAR-8. Some vendors work on the assumption that a .308 is a .308. That is untrue and can cause severe damage to the rifle and injury or death to the shooter and even bystanders. This is a very serious issue, and should not be taken casually or lightly. Steve/RRA |
Steve these are just drop in rails, replacing the standard hand guards, they have nothing to do with the barrel nut. But thanks for the info.
I know...but the inevitable response would head towards "use this..." or "use that...", so I wanted to head it off.
Steve/RRA |
Gotcha, not a problem.......I understand, and still waiting for the varmint 308
