Yeah, I want one, but need to do some overtime to... Oh forget you, I am NOT ordering one ...yet! I would need to see one in use to learn how they work and play with it a little first. Bill |

Mine is on the way.
I really want to know what you are conjuring up. I do have my dad's 1954-ish Army uniform, if that would play into it. |

When I first got my first 320 I got Nam on 80 meters at about 2200 EST, 0200Z. Incidentally running USB on 40 and 80 can be kinda funny. Once I had a guy break in and tell me we were running illegally because it's illegal to run USB on 40. I asked him why he was on USB if it was so illegal. He didn't know what to say. I later looked up his call. He'd been licensed since Marconi issued him his ticket. |

Yeah there are a few USB nets I occasionally participate in on 40/80 that get the occasional band cop dropping in trying to tell us we are wrong.... Actually if you check my "most awesome contact of this year story" I was running LSB on 17 which made that whole contact even more miraculous. I had just been on 40 and forgot to switch up. |

Isn't the USB/LSB convention just a defacto standard? I mean, all the digital modes use USB, right?
When I tried looking it up there were a few competing theories on why the convention exists, but it seems lost to the ages. |

You are not really doing anything wrong running USB on 40 and 80. However, it has been custom so long and so few hams run old military gear (often USB only) that when they hear someone running USB on 40 or 80 they assume some kind of crime is being committed and get weird about it. There was a brief conversation about this at a local club meeting. I entered it all wide-eyed and said, "I just got outta da joint for dat. They gimme me tree to five for runnin' USB on 40 meters!" Someone asked, "Really?" "Think about it," I said. "It's only custom to keep us on the same page." |

No one in the modern world uses LSB that I know of aside from hams. But back in the 50s some rigs only ran LSB or USB. Usually the ham rigs back then ran on the lower bands (40/80) and used LSB, so from an interoperability standpoint that's why it stuck around. Anyhow that's how I heard it. |

I usually use a "tuned" counterpoise with most of my MP's, and I was working 17m that day, not many contacts before I gave up, it was "unpleasant" with steady 50-60mph winds and gusts up to 100mph... |
