Icom 7200 . And I will have one , oh yes I will . If it would have came out a month or 2 earlier its what I would have got instead of my 450 . Simple and rugged , what else could you ask for.

At least it isn't orange!

About the 7200, did you order it that way, have it custom painted, or rattle-can it yourself?

Thanks for the compliments, Guys.
This is the new UnObtainium 7200....
OK, it's an Icom IC-7200 custom painted by Dan Gagnon WZ1P,  the guy that did Icom's IC-7200 Camo display at the Orlando Hamfest earlier this year.  This one is the OD version he calls Late Vietnam Olive Drab (LVOD).  I bought a new 7200 from AES Orlando and had it shipped directly to Dan in Lakeland, FL for the custom paint.

Here's an email from Dan Gagnon WZ1P explaining his custom paint process.

Email From Dan Gagnon WZ1P:
Hi Greg. Thanks for your email. Well...anything is possible. All it takes is money.

Seriously, I painted the olive drab and desert cammo radios for Icom. It was a really fun project. The trick is to get the radios to look 100% OEM. I requested that they send me the parts and what I got was fully assembled radios. The units had to be completely disassembled and masked. (6 hours) Custom mil-spec flat enamel paints had to be mixed. (3 hours) An airbrush primer coat was applied and stored in the dryer. (6 hours) And on it goes.

An olive drab radio takes about 20 hours labor while a camo one requires 32 hours. Icom was extremely happy with the work. They have to be...it's their name on it! I have done a few radios for ham's since last year. The Late Vietnam Olive Drab (LVOD) is $249.00 and the Fallujah Outline desert camo (FOL) is $399.00. Like I said it's not cheap but the results are outstanding.

Actually anyone can do the job with the right tools and a whole lot of patience. Please let me know if you need any more information. I'm glad to answer your questions.

73, Dan Gagnon WZ1P
Lakeland, FL

I'll pass. It looks slick, but nowhere near that slick.

Your PC's desktop photo reminds me that I need to gather the parts to build a ham radio interface for my DC headset

Oh, and sweet rig, but I think you might have some sort of olive drab complex

The same guy that did the paint job modifies DC Model H10-30's.  These are to be my upcoming birthday present.  I've been an aircraft A&P mechanic for nearly 30 years and have used similar DC headsets a bunch.

Thanks!  This isn't the only complex I have by any means.  Just ask my XYL.

BigDaddy, that new radio is sweet.  I really like the look of it.  How is it working for you?

Thanks!  Just picked it up this morning and only got to play with it for a little while before work.  First QSO was a VE1 station in Nova Scotia.  Good signal report.  I'm putting in extra innings at work now.  Maybe later tonight I'll get to play radio.

Hooking up an Acer Aspire One netbook for PSK31 was as simple as connecting (1) USB cable from the IC-7200 to the netbook.
HRD + DM780 full rig control with everything I've tried so far.  SWEET.

Should I be looking at the IC-7200 for my first HF rig?  Mainly I've been focused on the IC-718 or the FT-450, but have noticed the IC-7200 previously - I just wasn't sure what it had going for it that the other radios didn't have.  The simplified PSK31 stuff sounds....intriguing since I'd like to get into the digital junk.  Looks like a nice rig - I like it in green

I seriously considered the IC-718 for this latest HF radio buy.  It was over $500 cheaper than the IC-7200, and that's before the LVOD custom paint.
The 7200 has it's pros and cons, but I'm happy with the decision I made.

Factor in the price of a interface with a FT450 and the 7200 looks better , then a easier layout the 7200 is a good deal to me . If you know you are going to run digi dont forget to factor in the extras .

BigDaddy, it's Awesome.  Can you please tell me about this handle you have on the side?  That is not an Icom handle, it's MUCH better.  Can you please tell me where I could get one of those?

Thanks fender_fella!  It's called a Manhandle by Ernie KG4YNI.  I got mine through Dan Gagnon WZ1P, the gentleman that painted my 7200.

Thanks again.
