I think a BOV can be considered a main peice of gear in a SHTF situation. So lets see yours. Here is my Daily Driver/B.O.V.

You guys have a very different idea of what "off-roading" is compared to most Floridians.
This now has a 454 and articulates in the middle. It was a log skidder built in the mid 70's so the tires are about 20-ply.

And here's how I move it. Oh, the Blazer has a 454 in it too.

Fwiw, I drive a lot in my business and my vehicle setup is geared more toward a 'get-home' solution than a 'bugout' solution. My 'BOV' is my plain old every-day vehicle, a V8, 4wd dodge 1500 quad cab. My previous bov was my previous every-day vehicle as well, a V8, 4wd ford expedition. Nothing fancy, exotic, or attention-drawing, just the same vehicle I need for my business in rural arkansas anyway so it works out well. Between the back seat space, the under-the-backseat space, and a locking toolbox, I can carry not only my work-related stuff and vehicle-emergency stuff, but enough get-home gear to last me on foot a week or more.

I would be interested to see what you have on her, I am in the process of beginning to build the wife's FJ.

It's a work in progress. I have 5100s up front with Toytec/Eibach 110-620 springs, rear has 2" Icon lift springs. Then just 1.25" Spidertraxx spacers and 285 M/Ts.

Getting ready to install 3/4" Toytec front spacers to get it level.

Radflo or King fronts are in the future, as well as some longer rear shocks (near future). And UCA's.

I've been running without a rear swaybar for a few weeks, and I haven't noticed any negative side-effects yet. We'll see. I think with the longer shocks I'll add limit straps.

eta. I'm kind of jealous of the setup of your 4Runner on the top of this pages. My stuff is nothing compared to your setup

There's some excellent threads on modding the M1101/2 for camping on Steel Soldiers and Expedition Portal.  Converting the 24v to 12v is inexpensive (Steel Soldiers has how-to).

While it won't go all the places I can pull my M416, It appears to be a very capable base trailer for traveling back roads.

Kinda what I'm going for, tow vehicle is a mild lifted 88 Suburban. Not like I'm doing too many narrow trails. First couple mods, already lined out and ready to get building.........................

12v light conversion
7 blade standard harness
lowered 2 inch hitch
dodge steel 16" rims with 265/70R16 tires for now (rims $40 for all three on craigslist, tires free from when I lost one sidewall in my Tahoe and got a full set of four.) Got three rims and tires, because I need to have a spare 8 lug as the burb is 6 lug.

eventually I'll change to electric brakes and 6 lug hubs (both a bolt on affair)

I wanted a trailer I could haul plywood and general stuff, plus the ability to run it as a Texas sized camping trailer. Plans for at least a queen bed and storage/awnings are down the road.
I have aprox 3 hours till arrival, can't wait.

Yep. Light conversion is cheap. What year is yours? Make sure, if it's a '95, all 3 MWO tags are on there.

Eventually, I'll change out my axle for an electric brake one, so I can also use my Toyota FJ wheels.

What are you going to do with the HMMWV wheels? I may want one (or two) if you don't do anything with them... I'll pay shipping

Eventually I'll build a steel frame on top of mine and install a Roof Top Tent. Did you get a top with yours?

Here are mine being delivered a while back

eta. Here's how I had my Lunette Ring extended. Trailer sits just about flush with my lifted FJ, without having to use a retarded long riser Pintle.

It's a 98, tan, weird mounts in the bed. I'm getting it at a good price and as a bonus, it's already tagged/registered and ready to go here in Texas.

I have all the bulbs needed sitting in my electrical tool box. My plan was to swap on a 7 blade commercial end on the mil harness. Then disconnect the black out bulbs/lights, then use those wires for brakes and battery charging.
I plan to keep my axle in place only pulling the parking brakes. With these axles you can do it all at once or piece by piece. They make a reasonable price 6 lug hub with the correct brake drum and they make a complete electric brake assembly that also is a straight swap.

I was planning to sell the HMMWV wheels locally, I know they are very heavy and cost a bunch to ship. Not sure if your close enough to FTF, I'm in central Texas.

I did not get a top with mine, it's has some weird brackets/mounts in the back that I can't identify. At the rear are two round circles that almost look like propane bottle mounts?!? I'll post a pic and see if you guys know exactly what they are for.
I'm going to pull the extra brackets and make a shorter removable soft top. Go with a big bed and some storage for camping, keep it all pulled to use it for home projects also.

Hour twenty and counting.

I think that the topic should have been called Readers Rides.

There are very few vehicles out of all of these pages that I would categorize as being a Bug Out Vehicle.

Two scenarios -
1.  The SHTF and you are prepared to leave and you are getting out of Dodge before everyone else.

2.  The S already hit the fan and you are trying to get out of Dodge - but the main roads are all blocked with traffic - with the 1 million other people
that had the same idea as you.

The first scenario - you need the largest vehicle you can find that is enclosed that can haul YOU, your immediate family, all of your primary belongings,
Food, Clothing, Shelter, guns, radios, and everything you need to be self sufficient.
The Suburban with a extra gas tank, lift kit, big tires, heavy duty axles, a trailer to haul what the Suburban cannot is my first choice.
You have to believe that the electric is going to be out, the gas stations will not be pumping gas and the junkyards and parts stores are going to be closed.
You need a vehicle that you can steal parts from other vehicles to get to where you have to go - if you break down along the way.
This would exclude anything foreign, anything obsolete, anything unique.

The second - you need a Suburban or Avalanche type vehicle, something that you can both use to haul everything and something that you can sleep in if you have to.
You want to blend in with everyone else, you don't want to call attention to yourself - else someone else might rob you.
You want 4 wheel drive - since you will only be able to drive as far as the vehicle will go and then from there you will be on your own.

A large national Forrest with limited access would be my first choice, but you cannot walk in there like you just bought the place, else when you get there, you will find 100 other people with the same intent.
2nd choice would be the Bad Lands in Wyoming.  A person could really get lost in that place.
3rd would probably be Yellowstone National Park - since there would be some game that you would be able to eat to survive until things gets better or until who ever or what ever caused the event is gone, in power or has ran it's course.

Anyone planning on  fixed location - house along a main or back road, will be the first people to succumb to what ever threat is causing the event.
MY REASONING IS BECAUSE IF YOU CAN DRIVE THERE, SO CAN SOMEONE ELSE.
If they see smoke, they will figure fire, food and someone to steal from.
They didn't quit making guns when they made yours.
Eventually you have to go to sleep.
And, if it is a foreign power, they will just drop a bomb on your location and kill you instead of just trying to round you all up and make you conform.

With me, it won't be worth their bother to try to follow me deep into the Forrest and their resources will be better spent trying to round up all of the sheeple.
If it is a disease or pandemic - most people will already be dead before they ever make it out of Dodge!
You will bring it with you and won't even know it!

Our government has chemicals that 10 drops of one substance could pollute enough water in any of the great lakes to kill millions of people.
We have airborne diseases that could be released in the exhaust of a jet that would kill more people then the plague.

I recently bought a 2002 Suburban for a $1000 and so far have $300 in parts from the local pull-a-part. It's two wheel drive though. I also have a 2000 Silverado that share a lot of the same mechanical parts if I have to.
If neither of these will get me in the woods deep enough I have a 1979 Bronco that is about as basic a vehicle you will find with very little electronics except the ignition and charging circuit.

This is what happens when you do something stupid like use a chain to pull someone stuck out. The previous owner wasn't the brightest light bulb.

And I think I have posted the Bronco here before.

A little update to the M1102 trailer saga.........................

I present the M1102C  (civilian)

We have dodge 16x6.5 rims with 265/70r16 tires mounted by me by hand and balanced with airsoft bb's, and a 5000 lb 2 inch ball coupler mounted to a 3" square .250 wall tube 22 inches long held on with the factory holes using welded on 6x10x0.250 plate.

Simple and easy. Pull the inside bed brackets/mounts, new end on the trailer harness, 12v bulbs and a license plate mount left to do.

I'm picking up a fiberglass 17'  Casita Liberty Deluxe trailer on Saturday.

That makes it narrow and short enough to get into many National Forest campgrounds.

You would probably be better advised to convert that big heavy Suburban to 8 lug axles. 14B/D60.

It varies from place to place.

Older campgrounds are generally shorter lengths.

The Forest Service web site for that forest will have the restrictions.

I just picked up the Casita, which towed perfectly.

I took it up a 5% grade on the way home just to see how it would do - no issues.

Looks good! I had an '88 that was the same color, but reversed. It was a 4x4 and unstoppable in the snow. Wish I still had it, but it ended up rusting.
