What's the story behind the howitzer armed Cromwell tank?  What are those markings on the turret?

We saw this tank near LANGRUNES PLAGE near SWORD and JUNO beach...
The centaur tank should not get out of their field of operation namely barges and beaches. The graduation is actually intended for the score from the boat which these centaurs should support their troops fire on beaches. With no direct view of the purpose because of the front of the boat ramp, a shooting operator ran the shot from the back shelf of the cart or on the side of the boat.
Some shermans also had this same marking.

Thanks. Should have figured it out since at one time our battleships had similar markings (and range clocks).
