Serious question.

I thought the point of fruit was to spread seeds. Brightly colored fruits are seen easily by animals, eaten, and the seeds spread by poop.

Now, to me, its seems that watermelons are camouflaged. They don't need to be green because fruit has nothing to do with photosynthesis.

The only reason I can think of, is the fruit is hard to see until it is ripe, then it is some how broken open, exposing the bright red interior.

Anybody?

The sees are not viable until it is ripe. Spreading non-viable seeds prior to ripening is a waste.

Up until about 200 years ago, watermelons used to grow larger than the size of a small car.

They were so big it didn't matter if they had camouflage or not.

Because they are so god damn fun to shoot, beat, or just generally destroy. They had to be camouflaged or else the seeds would never be ripe enough to turn into a plant.

The scent of the higher sugar attracts animals, who either kick them open, or drill a hole in them. Animals are attracted by the scent - not the color.

And not all of them are all green:

Their fruit is an epigynous or false berry. A pepo to be exact.
It's common to the cucurbits.

We call them melons but they are in fact berries.

Because there is no evolutionary pressure for it to change color. It grows just fine being the color that it is.

I really have no idea if watermelons grow in the wild anywhere, and if not, what their closest living wild relative is.

Watermelons crack open when they get old and then the red attracts birds who then spread the older seeds, makes perfect evolutionary sense.

When I was a kid the stores sold watermelons that were dark green all over.

They were much better than the striped watermelons sold now.
