All you need is a good sized crock pot. Ingredients:

Bone in Boston Butt Roast($.99 cents a pound the other day lol)
1-2 onions
Clear soda/ginger ale 20oz
total cost: $11 for 8lbs of cooked meat

Slice up the onion in big slices and layer the bottom, put the roast on top. Put more slices on top and then dump in soda. Should fill 1/2-2/3's of the way.

Set the crock pot on low and let sit for 12 hours:

There will be a minor amount of fat that can be easily skimmed off. I just get a big plastic bowl and transfer the majority of the meat to it. Let the meat drip a little before you put it in the bowl. There's a couple bones inside that pull out easy. I use a big slotted spoon to get the rest out.  The meat pulls apart VERY easy, just use a couple big forks to tear it apart in the bowl. I remove the big slices of onion:

After this I clean the crock pot up and then take a good portion of the meat and put it back in with a bottle of my favorite BBQ sauce. Add in some water and let it cook on low for another hour or so. Will make GREAT bbq sandwiches. I also like taking a portion of the meat and making pork burritos. For those I just put the meat in a big pan with a can of peas, slice/cooked(most of the way in microwave) potatoes, onion, and chili powder.

And a little gun porn:

May have to try that.

Looks like a recipe even I can't fuck up.  I can try something that doesn't involve cooking over an open flame.

Question. If the Roast isn't completely covered by the soda will it still cook all the way through?

The recipe calls for ginger ale, my guess is to keep it moist. Any clear soda will work though. I'm in college and try to save all the money I can for guns, I ate off this roast for a week straight. Not bad for $11($20 if you count the buns, BBQ sauce.)

Oh yeah I'm sure it is, it's probably cooked in 7-8 hours and the other 4 is just bonus time. Kind of like with other slow cooked stuff. You'll know if it's cooked all the way, it'll fall apart when you take it out of the pot.

They can get bent, I like food that's easy to cook and cheap. There's not a lot of types of food that I can eat for weeks on end, shredded pork is one of them.

No kidding, who the hell puts peas in pulled pork? Those peas look overcooked too, I hate overcooked peas.

I use the peas and potatoes, then throw in some cheese/salsa and then wrap it up in a tortilla.

We have a place in town that does that, they call it the McGuire, it is tasty and will do the voodoo to your poo poo.

I give you a 10 though.

No not in the times I've done it. About 1/2-2/3's of the way. I ate the last bit of my one from last week earlier today and am going to put in another one in about an hour. The roast went up to $1.39 per pound tho

You may want to spray the inside of the crock pot a little with PAM before you put it in.

I'm trying to figure out some other stuff I can do with the meat afterwords other than BBQ and burritos. I tried a breakfast burrito with scrambled egg, pork, and salsa. It wasn't that good. might be good with some fresh corn tortillas and some Pico De Gallo

Maybe throw in some beans or hot peppers or a combination of rice(maybe even fried rice), hot peppers, shrimp and some spices.  Corn on the cob for a side dish. This will obviously be more expensive as you add more stuff to it , but the options are limitless!

Sounds good, I will give it a try.

I have a similar recipe for beef brisket (easy/cheap).
Put said beef brisket in a turkey sized cooking bag. Pour in a 16 oz. coke. Add two bottles of Heinz Chili Sauce. Put in the oven on low (275, 300 something like that) all day. I put the cooking bag in something like a turkey roaster just in case something bad happens. After I take it out of the oven I cut the bag open in the turkey roaster (buy an alluminum one at the store so you don't have to clean it) and let the meat sit in the juices after I slice it.
This IS greasy. You can trim a lot of fat off the brisket before cooking but no matter what you do, it will be greasy. But, if you like beef brisket, this probably isn't an issue for you (it isn't for me).
Being a single guy I make stuff like this and then freeze most of it in plastic zip lock bags.

FWIW: I think part of the reason for the soda is as a meat tenderizer. With these cheap cuts of meat, you need all the help you can get. It also of course adds flavor and keeps the meat moist.

BBQ Pizza comes to mind.  Back in the early 80's Pizza Hut used to sell a BBQ pizza.  It was a regular cheese pizza with BBQ as a topping.  I really liked it.  I sometimes take BBQ and put it on pizzas still.

Thanks for the recipe.  I just might have to give it a try.

Here's how I do it––put the pork shoulder, butt, country style ribs, whatever, in the crockpot with a chopped onion, several cloves of garlic, some dried apple chips; I might sprinkle a package of onion soup mix over it.  Squirt some yellow mustard over the top.  Sometimes I'll pour a bit of apple juice in the pot as well, and/or half a bottle of barbecue sauce.  I usually put a rack on a saucer in the bottom of the pot to elevate the roast out of most of the juice––you want to slow roast it, not boil it.  Let 'er rip on slow for 8 hours, or 'til the meat will come off the bone.  I pour off the sauce and juices and reduce it in a small pan, makes great sauce all by itself.  If I want to make a roast instead of pulled pork, I brown the roast in a cast iron skillet before putting it in the crockpot.

Instead of soda, i used apple juice and enough cider vinegar to give it kick. After it pulled and cooked, i put it back in with the apple juice/cidar, and add half a bottle of sweet baby rays. Once its hot hot again it good to go, but the longer it cooks the better it gets.

I like to start it before bed, pull it in the morning, and have it for dinner.

  • 1 (3 to 4 1/2 lbs) beef roast, trimmed (chuck works great)

  • 1 can (12 ounces) beer (you choose the flavor), or use 1 1/2 cups beef broth

  • 1 envelope dry Italian salad dressing mix

  • 1 12-oz. jar Pepperoncini peppers, with the liquid

  • Hard Rolls, Bulkie Rolls, French Bread, etc.

Preparation:

Pour beer into crock pot. Drain liquid from pepperoncini into crockpot. Stir in the salad dressing mix until well-blended. Place about half of the peppers in the crockpot. Trim fat from the roast; place in crock pot on top of peppers. Top roast with remaining peppers. Cook Italian beef on low 8 to 10 hours Remove cooked roast from crockpot; cool slightly. While still warm, pull roast with two forks to shred. To serve, ladle small amount of warm liquid from crock over split roll or bread, top with shredded beef, then follow with more beef liquid as desired.

Serves 12 to 16

Serve with forks and a stack of napkins.

I use 1 3lb pork shoulder and 1 3lb pork roast, covered in Famous Daves Rib Rub, crock pot for 8+ hours, let cool so fat solidifies, scrape off fat and leave juice, smoke meat chunks on Weber with hardwood charcoal and soaked wood chips for 1 hour, shred and mix in leftover juice.

If I want fast pulled pork I just throw a pork roast in the pressure cooker with some BBQ sauce, onions, pepper, and water.  After it pressure cooks for about 40 minutes I throw it on the side of the grill for 15 minutes to get that smokey flavor.

I use orange soda instead of ginger ale, I also put some Smuckers orange jam in it.

I'll skim the fat off the liquid but I won't drain it (that's a lot of flavor / nutrients you are wasting), then I'll put a bottle of KC Masterpiece bbq in and cook it for a few more hours.

Hy-vee + suppressor = Where the hell are you?  NFA in Iowa?  I'm stumped

A few years ago I did roughly the same thing with beef, but simmered in water with herbs. added BBQ sauce, then 2 or 3 shots of Laphroiag instead of liquid smoke.

A friend of mine asked if I had bought a smoker.  Laphroiag > liquid smoke.
