So the St. Louis Susan Komen walk is tomorrow. They walk on Market St., IIRC, which is about six lanes or more wide. It's nothing but women in pink and pussywhipped men for as far as the eye can see. They get an unreal turnout. My question is, why is breast cancer a subject so near and dear to so many?
The National Cancer Institute estimates 40,000ish women will die from breast cancer in 2009. In 2005, 864,000 people dies from cardiovascular disease. That's only 20 times more, but you sure as shit don't see them closing down a six lane road for people to fill it up to raise money and awareness. Hell, in 2004, 121,000 people died of COPD, 63,000 of them being women. All other causes of death are in decline, except COPD. Less and less people a year die from heart disease and cancer, but more and more die from COPD, and COPD is an uber shitty way to go. Again, where's the million man march for COPD?
Statistically, breast cancer is a pretty small player, but why does it get so much attention? Looking at the numbers, I'm starting to think it's less about the disease and more about some kind of women's lib/empowerment trip. Or am I missing something?
