So the St. Louis Susan Komen walk is tomorrow.  They walk on Market St., IIRC, which is about six lanes or more wide.  It's nothing but women in pink and pussywhipped men for as far as the eye can see.  They get an unreal turnout.  My question is, why is breast cancer a subject so near and dear to so many?

The National Cancer Institute estimates 40,000ish women will die from breast cancer in 2009.  In 2005, 864,000 people dies from cardiovascular disease.  That's only 20 times more, but you sure as shit don't see them closing down a six lane road for people to fill it up to raise money and awareness.  Hell, in 2004, 121,000 people died of COPD, 63,000 of them being women.  All other causes of death are in decline, except COPD.  Less and less people a year die from heart disease and cancer, but more and more die from COPD, and COPD is an uber shitty way to go.  Again, where's the million man march for COPD?

Statistically, breast cancer is a pretty small player, but why does it get so much attention?  Looking at the numbers, I'm starting to think it's less about the disease and more about some kind of women's lib/empowerment trip.  Or am I missing something?

i think they should stop wasting time on the awareness stuff and switch to raising money for a cure and/or better treatment.

It killed my grandmother and my grandfather had it as well

Is it the #1 killer?  No, but that doesn't mean we don't give a shit

I believe that awareness and early detection greatly reduce the deaths caused by breast cancer.
50 years ago, it was a death sentence, today, not so much.
It doesn't matter if its breast cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease. Awareness is the key to survival.

Breast cancer affects women of all different situations.  Many of the diseases you listed are directly related to activities like diet, exercise, smoking, etc.  The men who attend these events are most likely regular guys.  Someone very close to me just found out she has breast cancer.  She found the lump while serving in Afghanistan.  She stayed for her whole tour and only sought treatment upon return.  So, it seems to me that neither the women nor the men at these events are the weak people you describe.

because the dude's with heart disease can't walk that far?

My dad died from it in 94, I have to keep my diet in check to make sure I don't end up the same way. But the way I see it, the 7th heart attack killed him so I have a few in me before I go
