if you must remove the character lines try a pencil eraser follwed up with clp.

I've seen a few guys use adhesive "mole skin" on their brass deflectors...
You can get it in black or camo from most archery shops! |

This was from doing the bump while the receiver ran along one of the rivets on my jeans. It's a nice squiggly line. [:D]
