I got the following e-mail today. When I checked my C-drive according to the directions, I did find the SULFNBK file mentioned but it was listed as an application file instead of an EXE file. I have the feeling that this e-mail is hogwash. Is this a virus or is it simply one of Windows application files? If it is not a virus, there will probably be a lot of folks out there screwing up their windows files.

This email was sent to me today. I checked my computer and sure enough, it was there. So you all need to check your computer. The virus will show
up on all of your computers but it apparently takes a while for it to be
activated. So I am now emailing all of you to tell you how you can check
and delete it. It is very simple.

The virus is supposedly programmed to activate after being on you C drive
for a while. Because of the delay in activation, Norton and McAfee do not pick it up. No one knows how long this virus has been on the system. It is possible that it had been around for several months. When it does become active, it will erase all files and folders on your hard drive. The virus gets spread when you send out e-mails and filters into C:\WINDOW\COMMAND. In order to find this virus, follow the instructions below:

>Click on "start"
>Choose "find" or “search”
>Choose "files and folders"
>Select "find"
>Select "C drive"
>Name of file to search for : SULFNBK.EXE
If you find this file DO NOT OPEN IT! Select by right clicking on your
mouse and DELETE it. Then close the window and empty your RECYCLE BIN.

To empty RECYCLE BIN
1. On the desktop Double Click on the RECYCLE BIN
2. On the FILE menu, click Empty Recycle Bin

The good news is that YOU HAVE ELIMINATED THE VIRUS ON YOUR COMPUTER. The bad news is that you have transmitted this virus to anyone you may have sent emails to in the last month or so. I'm truly sorry! Please contact everyone in your address book and pass this message along.

Lumpy- dont follow those directions! SULFNBK.exe (it is an application- thats what an exe file is) is a windows utility that has something to do with renaming long file names or something. it is an exe file, so it can become infected with a virus, but is not in and of itself a virus.

best thing to do is do a virus scan with norton or mcaffee, and remember to update your virus definitions beforehand!

PS- deleting that file wont screw up your computer, so if you have already done it, dont worry too much! i just advise against doing it if you havent.

I could look this up on the hoax list but I think this went around last year. The key is the final sentence with is found in nearly all these hoaxes "I'm truly sorry! Please [b]contact everyone in your address book and pass this message along.[/b]"

I have this file on my computer and I'm running McAfee AND Panda Anti-Virus and use a personal firewall.

supposedly the hoax originated in Brazil and the email was portugese originally.

this wmail went around the Tennessee Firearms yahoo mail group, but was debunked by a member who remembered the original hoax.

Yeah, exe files are applications.

Never download, unless you know the source:

.exe
.com
.bat
.pif
.vbs
.js
.html (Can contain Java or VBScript)
.pl
.c
.asm
.bas

or anything with double extensions:

.doc.vbs
.jpg.pif
.mp3.exe

and so on...

The following are USUALLY safe to download:

.jpg
.mp3
.mpg
.mpeg
.jpeg
.gif
.tiff
.psd
.pict
.art
.wmf
.asf
.avi
.DivX
.wmv

and the rare exception to the Double extensions rule:

.divx.avi

Actually, it's not horse shit. That destructive letter has been circulating around for a while now causeing people to screw up their systems. That Email itself is as bad as any virus out there.

In 10 years and all the many emails I've received about a virus...I have yet to get one that was true.

Sure, I've had people who were sincere forward information that was emailed to them. And it's not impossible for somebody to send you an email. But in practice the general rule is:

Don't believe emails that talk about a computer virus.

Thanks for helping me locate the file. I did this last yr from an e-mail froma friend. Just copied off work computer, take home and re-install tonight.
