It's a box stand. It will be out on the farm on 12 foot 4x4s, for my son and I to hunt in.
That looks like a lot of work, I think I would've stapled some branches to it when I got it out there and called it a day
Looks good, but personally I would have painted the whole thing OD green first. Then done your pattern on it. It is coming along nicely through. Good luck hunting.
Doh! Why didn't I think of that?!!? Actually, it's a rainy day out and I took a vacation day. I think I'll do the other two sides with a less complex pattern. |
Psssst--once it's been out there for a month or three they will ignore it anyway. The pattern or color means nothing to deer once they are used to its presence.
Still dont get the camo thing.
Critters wont pay it no mind if it is there for any length of time, and you arent gonna be moving that thing very often. Id paint it blaze orange so any idiots out there might see it. |
Roller paint in OD green or a medium brown and surplus camo netting would also be quick. |
It looks like a collage of penguins. |
Good point, they can't tell it from a pump house or chicken coop. |
trying to cross the highway maybe |

Your Fudd Hut is not hard to see with that camo... you know that right?
I just wanted to make sure you didnt think you were in magical "INSISO TACTICAL" mode in there... Good luck on your hunt when the time comes... +1 on blaze orange suggestion. PITSNIPE OUT |
It looks nice, but how are you gonna get the constructed box stand on top of the 4x4's?? |
The secret is, it is entirely constructed so that it is easily assembled/disassembled, using lag bolts, bolts, and nuts. So the platform is attached to the 4x4, and then that platform is raised and cross-braced. Then you climb up, and start hauling the walls and putting thems up, after three walls are up, the roof is placed on. finally, the back wall is placed on. |

Just waiting for the HDTV to come in....... |

That's fucking cool.
ETA: No more cold wet ass for you! I need to build something like that. Sitting on the ground leaned on a tree is nice for a while, but it gets cold and nasty sometimes. |
yup |
I saw some box blinds similar to that at Cabela's today, $899 for the smaller one and $1099 for one about the size of yours.
I thought that $1K would buy a lot of plywood and camo spray paint <G>. |
You hunt out of a box? Is it still called hunting when you do that?
Are you in one of those "elevated only" counties?
I'd like to put something like that out in our larger horse pasture. Might help me take care of our coyote problem. CHRIS |
At least you like it.
I would go get a can of OD latex mixed up at the local hardware store and start from there. Also ditch the white paint and put a good roof on it. The roof is the most important thing and a bare sheet of plywood is not a good roof. |
Add a floor and some eye bolts and raise it into a tree with a coffin hoist.
or Onto a hay wagon. With the hay wagon, you could set an idling chainsaw on the deck, a virtual deer call; the deer would have no fear then, they'll be milling around without a care in the world. |

If you kill something it is. |

Ive built 2 tower stands so far and am planning at least 1 more. Soooo comfy being out of the wind and rain.
1st was a 6'x6' on 12' legs. Almost too big for one person. 2nd a 4'x4' on 16' legs. A little small for one person with gear. I concreted treated 4x4 posts in the ground with a foot or 2 sticking out. Left a nice little pad of concrete around the posts. Hauled stand out there and attached legs and bracing laying on its side. Slide 2 legs against 2 posts in ground. Put a strap around the floor area as this was the sturdiest part. Connected a heavy rope to strap and to ball hitch on truck. Used a ladder vertically between truck and tower under rope to get the pulling force upwards. SLOWLY drove truck forward till tower is resting on all 4 pads. Used a 4 wheeler with another rope to hopefully stop it from going past vertical. Align 4 legs with 4 posts, drill holes and bolt together. Add ladder or stairs to door. Best of all is the urinal. When concreting the posts in I added a 1/2" pvc pipe down the hole. Then ran the pipe up into the stand and conected a funnel to it. No worries about having to pee when hunting. Something(bugs, leaves,?) got in the pipe this year and I have a backup in my urinal now. Gonna have to snake it out somehow and add a screen or cover. Building the stand is half the fun. The next one will have insulation, real sliding windows and a little wood stove. Maybe even solar powered lights. |

Yes, rifle for deer, you must be 8 feet up. You can hunt with pistol or shotgun from ground. |
Psssst--hunters have "patterns" not "motifs." |
You're killing me!! |
I have popped up a 6ft by 8ft hunting blind @ 0500 and had many deer within ft of it @ 0600. No mature bucks but plenty of deer. |
As you should be! |
Your Fuddness sickitates me!
Honestly, that's a sweet deer blind! |
What was the total price tag on your setup? |
I really don't think deer are that smart.
They can come within 50 feet of you up here at the shooting range, it's amazing. But the bastards seem to have a freaking calendar. Come hunting season, they disappear. |
I've never camo'd my box blind. Just plain plywood works fine, especially once it's "seasoned" out in the elements.
That said, I have plenty of experience painting camo. Yours will work just fine (though the white spots may spook deer at first since they stand out in low light; however, once they get used to it, your face hovering in the window won't be as big a deal to them if they spot you.), but if you want a serious camo job, you paint the lightest shade first, then progressively darker. For example, let's say I'm painting my car to blend in with the woods. My chosen colors are a light drab green, a dark forest green, brown, and black. First, I'd paint the entire thing light drab green. Then I'd paint on large brown splotches in my chosen pattern. Next, smaller dark forest green splotches. And finally, even smaller black splotches, or maybe tiger stripes to break up the pattern some more and help the black rollbar, bumper, etc. blend in more. As I said, your blind will do just fine as is. Here's hoping it gives you a few years of successful and enjoyable hunting. |

Where's the camo beer cooler
Nice blind on a serious note looks like a good spot as well. |
Around $450. |
That looks great. I need to build one or two myself before next season. Getting tired of hunting off the dozer.
Yet you clicked... |
teenagers will totally be boinking in that thing while laying out of school when season is not in.....you know that, right?
Please put a game camera INSIDE your blind. |
