OK On the advice of Arfcom I decided to shell out some cash for a nice bottle of Makers Mark. I am sorry but Gentleman Jack takes the win on this comparison.
I think GJ is smoother... Anyone have any other selections they think is better? discuss. |
Maker's Mark is my standard, but if you want premium, try this.

MM beats GJ anytime. GJ isn't bourbon either, so it doesn't really compare.
But there is better out there. MM is my standard though, my go-to whisky. |
wild turkey 101
very good bourbon also gentleman jack is sour mash, not bourbon, which makers mark is TXL |
I love MM, but I think that Jack old no. 7 is smoother. I like the taste of MM over Jack though. Woodford Reserve is great too, but it has a little more bite to it than MM, IMO.
First in with Knob Creek.
I have Wild Turkey 101 and Woodford's Reserve in addition. Rounding out the whisky I have on hand is a bottle of Talisker 10. |
Crown Reserve, MM, JD, Bushmills....in that order......unless you have Captain Morgans and a diet Pepsi.
Knob Creek (easy to find in California), followed closely by Woodford Reserve. I actually alternate between the two depending on mood.
+1. There's Bourbon and everything else . . . GJ is "Tennessee Whiskey" and NOT Bourbon, no matter what some people may think. MM has been and remains my favorite. I just bought a bottle of Knob Creek, based on a recommendation here on ARFCOM. I must say that I am a disappointed. |
I asked for bourbon opinions a few months back, and someone suggested Basil Hayden. Not gentle on the wallet, but it is damned fine whiskey.
I really like Woodford Reserve, but I've been drinking MM since I was 16, and I think my palate has adapted to the point that I can't get as hooked on anything else. The two I keep on hand are MM and Woodford, the Woodford probably comes out 1/5 of the time. |
Crown in any form (Special Reserve or regular) wins out every time.
Have got to weigh in...........
start off with Canadian Mist ( canadian piss) Start day 2 with Pendelton! |
I am sorry, but you are way wrong. Give MM a chance. JD is so high school...
Very good choices. |
MM's my standard. If I feel like shelling out a couple more bucks I go with Woodford Reserve. If I'm feeling daring I go with Booker's!!!
Reminds me I have a bottle of MM at home, I may have to have a bit when I get home tomorrow morning.
Some of my fave's:
Blanton's Evan Williams Single Barrel The older style Woodford Reserve I still need to try some Knob Creek one of these days. |
I hear Pendleton is real smooth, goes good with a couple ice cubes and a Monte #2
As far as I'm concerned Bookers True Barrel is the definition of what bourbon should be. edited for spelling |
Maker's Mark is an excellent whiskey, but I like to drink Gentleman Jack and old No. 7 as well. Is all a matter of what's a vailable to me.
MM makes me tired and depressed, dont know why.
Give me good ole shine, thats my whiskey of choice. |
"Bookers" = NONE better! "Lip-numbing/128-proof pure sipping bourbon!" However, I hear "Woodford's Reserve" is close? |
Woodfords Reserve is tasty delicious, but Bookers is in a league of it's own. |
Now I NEVER said JD... I said Gentlemen's Jack... Jack Daniels Old #7 may be High School (thanks for triggering old memories... No really Thanks... all those are good ) But it still is my "go to" |
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel. Now THAT is a treat. Have a glass of that with a great cigar and you are set. |
After Booker's, everything else has the kick of water...
I like all of the brands mentioned so far - I would say that the Woodford Reserve is the smoothest I've come across. |
Basil Hayden Bourbon is the best bourbon I have ever tasted. Ever.
I have drank Jack, all three, Makers Mark, Bulliet, Knob Creek, and many others. None compare to this wonder drink. Read about it here. |
I drink Maker's Mark, but if I can't get it, I'll drink Jim Beam Black. I think it's almost as good.
Bookers is my favorite. Knob Creek or Maker's Mark for a cheaper alternative.
Old Forrester's Birthday Bourbon
Nothing I have had comes close. 23 years old. www.oldforester.com/better/birthday.asp ETA |
Evan Williams Single Barrel is my standard go to bourbon. Blanton's is great but I've only had it by the shot. If you want a Canadian Whisky, go for 40 Creek.
Bookers?! If the OP is looking for smooth, this is definetly not it. It's, what, 126 proof? That'll blow your sack off. Edit: +1 though, damn good, don't get me wrong. |
Agreed. This is right up there with the best of them. Someday, i'll buy a whole barrel........ Securing your own personal stock of Jack Daniel's whiskey is a rare investment. The total price will depend on your barrel's yield and local taxes. However, you can expect to pay between $35 and $40 per bottle. The barrel price will range from $8400 to $9600. |
I'll take GJ over MM everytime MM gives me the worst hang overs and I don't think its as smooth as GJ.
Everyone needs to send me a bottle of your particular favorite so I can take a sip from each and provide and AAR. Perhaps a new "Whiskey Drinkers" Forum?
Anything made in Lynchburg, TN. I usually like the single barrel, but GJ is good also. You can never go wrong with Old No. 7.
You outta see what the rare bottles of MM go for on ebay...... thanks for the biz, folks!! Lots more rare, small batches sold around here,we can get MM Gold all day. Now Woodford Reserve,we used to do pick-ups there(4-5 pallets of Reserve)the little road is tree lined, and known for taking the roofs off of trailers.
But if I were to drink bourbon, Bookers wins by far. |
