Any suggestions for a 30.06 semi auto rifle?  Besides a Garand.

Besides a Garand, you would be looking at a Remington. It is not built as strongly as a Garand. Or a Browning BAR. That is the sporting rifle. Probably a little stronger than the Rem. But I doubt it will have the life span of the M1 Garand.

Why not a Garand? You are not going to find any commercial sporting rifle built anywhere near as rugged and indestructable.

If you are simply looking for a mere hunting rifle that you won't be staking your life on, I would look at the Remington 7400 and the Browning BAR.

I believe your options are
1) Garand
2) BAR (M-1918 in semi)
3) BAR (the other kind)
4) M-1919/1917

Kinda rare, but have you considered a SAFN-49 battle rifle?

Built like a tank and almost as heavy.

More or less the equivalent of a Garand.

Didn't Guns&Ammo recently have a cover story on a new semi-auto .30-06 by H&K?  You might want to look into that.

What is your objection to the Garand?

Bah. I want an SAFN-49 in 8mm, but our dear friend Bill screwed that up for me. I don't see much point in getting the castrated version because my only interest in it was as a historical curio. (That as well as a fun semiauto peep sighted rifle in 8mm.)

I gave up on shooting corrosive ammo in gas guns - so it's doubtful that I'd even shoot it much.

If you want to go commercial style:

I don't know about HKs new .30-06 guns, but they did make a rifle called the 970 (It may be 930) a while back.  It is roller delayed recoil opertated and has polyagonal rifling.  I believe importation of all the guns in the series that the 970 belonged was terminated in 1985.

Here is my HK 770.  The 770 is the same thing as the 970, but in .308 rather than .30-06.  I have 3 3 round mags, which are flush with the bottom of the rifle, and one 10 (it may be 9).

Restored to exact military specifications, the M1941 Johnson is a very rare firearm designed prior to WWII by a Marine Corps Captain. The quick change barrel and a ten round magazine that can be reloaded during firing are but two of the many unique M1941 Johnson innovations. The M1941 Johnson was used by the Marine Raiders and the Para-Marines at the beginning of World War II and served as their main semi-auto rifle until adoption of the M1 Garand in late 1942.
