SARs are the AKs I am condidering, bedsides the expensive Veprs.  I like the idea of having a 7.62 though. It is cheap, and most importantly...different.

I'd probably go with the AR-180, but IT IS an awful like the AR- regardless I've always thought they looked cool - plus the IRA uses them.

Other than that, there's always been a soft spot in my heart (and in my safe) for another CMP M1.  Getting one of these rifles makes me more giddy than a kid on Christmas morning.

I am the anti-AK him self but that's just me.
You should most likey buy the AK cuz you really can't f@#$%up an AK like you can something more complex like a FN or G3 and you said you have an AR,so I would buy the AK.

I had a hess G3 and will never buy a copy again.
The only copied guns that are ever any good are 1911s and ARs.
$500.00 is not all the money in the world but it's to much just to throw away.

SAR1 is a good choice, plus you'll have money left over ammo and mags.  Even though I prefer my AR's, I think everyone should own at least one AK. I will tell you though, I've never had much luck accuracy wise with AK's. But then they're not designed for paper punching.

On the other hand, I also thank that everyone should own an FAL. In my opinion the best .308 battle rifle. I bought a CAI one on an Imbel receiver, and I love mine. But you may have to shell out a few more dollars to get it running right, sometimes just a new gas piston though. As far as accuracy, not quite as good as an AR, but far more accurate than an AK. And they are plenty reliable.

I guess it depends on how accurate a rifle you want. Anyway, hope this helps.

Edited because I can.

CDNN has a nice new ak out that is $449.00 and has a nice muzzlebrake already attached. It ain't too ugly either. What would be the potential use for this gun you want to buy? Protection, hunting, shooting, all three?
for deer hunting- get a .308 fal g3 or CETME.
protection - get a real accurate rifle.
shooting - something ammo is fairly cheap for.

a .308 fits all of those criteria so you are good to go on that.

I'm leaning towards the SAR, maybe the Kel Tec.  Where is a good place to find a new in box SAR-1 online?

Check out AIM Surplus, they've got about the best deals on them, and they're good people to deal with.

KelTec?  Don't go crazy, man!  That is one of the most worthless weapons I can think of.  To top it off, it's 9mm!

The only reason anyone has ever bought one of these is because they look "bad ass."  Personally, when I see someone who owns one I think "Hmmm, they don't know squat about guns so they bought that worthless POS."

No flame or offence intended...I would avoid it like sex with Janet Reno!

What do you currently have and what are you favorite calibers?

For $500, you may want to get the mini-14 plus a 10/22, this way you can shoot the mini-14 for a while than switch to the 10/22 and shoot all day for only a few dollars.

1. any AK under $500, including Vepr II

Sar 1,2, or 3 if you want to go cheap, but the Vepr II is really nice and comes in in 7.62 or .223, 5.45 should be out soon.

2.AR-180-Armalite

Who knows, not available yet, I got one on order. Too much like an AR if you want something different.

3.Kel Tec sub 2000 in 9mm

I wouldn't. (low cap mags)

4.mini-14

Definately not. (bad accuracy, good hi-cap mags hard to find and expensive)

5.G3 copy
6.FAL clone

Both of these clones that are available for under $500 are a potential POS. Either save enough to get a good one ($800-$1800) or be ready to learn how to gunsmith to make it work.

Best bang for the buck is probably the SAR's, but could have problems (canted sights, trigger slap, etc..), that said I would go with the Vepr II, good looks, great reliability, better accuracy than your normal AK. High caps cheap and plentiful, ammo cheap. Now you still have to choose caliber.

I'd probably wait and save a little more for a nice FAL before going the CETME route.

Either that or I'd pick up one of those unissued Persian Mausers from Samco. Very sweet.

Well, I think I've decided on the SAR-1.

Here is why:  I spent $800 on my postban Bushy. Now, I regret not saving for a preban AR.  This is because the postbans will most likely remain at the same price level for some time. The prebans price only go one way, up.

So, I can always buy a Kel TEC Mini-14, Vepr, or anything else. The SARs, now going for around $300, may be $500 in a year or two.

Does this sound reasonable?
thanks for all replies!

If you want something different, try an SAR-2. Mags are cheap and plentiful, they have the optics-mounting bracket on the side, 5.45 is certainly different, and AIM has SAR-2's on sale for $240.  At that price, you might even be able to squeeze the sub 2000 into your budget.

My SAR-2 looked pretty ugly when I bought it, but it turned out really nice with some teflon/moly, and a little effort.  I just topped mine off with a Kobra red dot site, and the whole package looks pretty cool.
