Enjoy: Thermite video

That's odd... I copied the link exactly. Curse you interweb! I'm going to have to figure out how to link to it. Oh, BTW I only added the warning like a minute after posting. Sorry about that. If anyone finds this video elsewhere please link it. It's really awesome.

I'd like a few hundred pounds of that please. I remember reading about that in the Jolly Roger cookbook many many years ago.

So does the link work or not?

Hopefully this one works better : video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7231843493488769585&q=thermite

The link worked fine for me...

Maybe all the pop ups are killing it. I have google pop up blocker and it killed 3 of them and left the video.

I wonder how many times times its own weight of water thermite can vaporize at room temperature.  I guess I could figure out the energy output in Calories of thermite, but I don't want to bother right now.

Will standard cannon fuse light it?

Could it be used to burn out old stumps?

I have used it more than once.  It works great if the stump is dry.  It might burn most of the day.

Sparklers work great for fuses.

Well it looks like it would work far better than the old method of waiting for a dry summer and using charcoal and a box fan!

I'll definately try it.  What is the easiest and cheapest way to get some in reasonable quantities?

I think they sell thermite at Knob Creek.  I seem to recall seeing a kid asking his dad if he could have money for some thermite.  Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

It's how the Brits pronounce and spell the element "Al": Aluminium.
In the US, it is aluminum.

It was on Jeopardy a few days ago:
"A beverage container made of this material that the British might recycle..."

"Alex, what is aluminum?"
BZZZT wrong

The answer was, what is aluminium...

Thermite is commonly used to weld rail together in RR applications.

There's a version that's used to weld grounding rods to rebar and structural steel as well. Cad-weld?

I'm a little disappointed - technically, they didn't add cold to hot, they added hot to cold...

I wonder what the results would have been if they'd initiated the Thermite, and then dumped LN into the container?

Strange but true… Aluminum is actually the original spelling!

Humprey Davey, the Brit who discoverd it in 1808 first called it Aluminum, but then changed his mind in 1812 and called it Aluminium…
