Actually, if I were REALLY collecting data off ar15.com, I probably would need human subjects approval, although since it's sort of a "public" behavior kind of place, it's not clear what kind of consent I would need.
Luckily, because our human subjects committee also deals with the medical school (and we've got one of the really big ones in the country), they are really laid back about behavior research, and barely even care about survey research - because they often are reviewing experiments that DO involve injecting stuffinto people and drastic things like that.
