A once-again timely passage from Churchill's "The River War, an Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan".  Churchill served in this campaign in 1898, and took part in the British cavalry charge against the Muslim forces of the self-proclaimed Mahdi, just north of Omdurman.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.

The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

-Sir Winston Churchill (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

Wow! That guy was quite far ahead of his time politically.
It shows that Islamic militancy and the other less than desirable aspects of the ROP have been around for quite some time, and is not something that "BUSH is trying to capitalise on" as some of the liberals would suggest.

The appeasers in Brtain between the wars ignored this brilliant man's warnings about Hitler for years, and it cost the British dearly. Our civilization is repeating their error.

Rather than that, fundamental Islamic society hasn't changed much since trhe 7th century.

Same as it ever was...

Powerfully damning stuff.

Churchill was a brilliant man.

This just goes to show how intelligent Churchill really was. He also had balls, too. He stared facism in the face and vowed not to yield.

A good leader, and spot on with this assessment.

Democrats must envy the Muslim "plantation" mentality.

So would Admiral "Bull" Halsey if he repeated his famous words "Before we're through with them, the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell".

Got to agree with you there.

You know, I listened to a speech made by Churchill (the "We'll fight them..." speech). He was a DAMN good speaker. I mean, you feel empowered by his speech - and this is 60 years after the fact.

The man could make even the worst speech sound good. He was confident sounding and resilent. Both good qualities in a leader.

What is most striking to me is not just how true these same words are today, but how plainly they were once spoken.  Who in power today is stating the obvious?  We are not fighting few terrorists among a group of peace loving Muslims, we are at war with Islam.
