Just a few pics of my Grandfather. An unsung WWII Hero.

This is him circled in red

This is him shaking FDR's hand

A PR photo of him during a War Bond drive

Another of him in the Oval Office

They had a sense of humor back then as well

Even though they misspelled his name, this picture was in LIFE Magazine.

Pfc. Charles Sumner Swain, 6 Bttln Rangers, Company "C" WWII....gone 13+ yrs now. I miss him, I love him.

Wow, those are great! He looks like the type of person I'd have loved to meet. My grandfather served in Korea and I can listen to him tell stories and show me pictures for hours on end. Thanks for sharing those!

Those pics are great! My Grandfather passed last Thanksgiving and I have similar pics of him. Those were brave men!

Thanks for sharing.

My grandfather spent his 19th birthday in a fox hole in France.

He is 79 and was just diagnosed with cancer, we are hoping for the best.

Awsome post!

I read Ghost Soldiers. It was an amazing book. Your grandfather was a true hero and you should be proud!

That was a fantastic book. All who were involved in that operation were heros with a capital "H".

Thanks, Stoney.

Part of the business the GF and I own is delivery and set-up of a type of equipment to veterans, ordered by the V.A. Medical Center.

I alternately enjoy and get dismayed when I visit with the veterans.

Enjoy because I realize that I'm generally in the presence of humble greatness.

Dismayed because all too many of these guys are essentially on their last legs-and know it, too.

Most of the vets are War II, some are Korean. I delivered to one Vietnam vet's house and as I was setting up his equipment I noticed a framed picture-magazine cover, actually-of two GIs assisting another that seemed to be dazed or wounded. I asked, "Do you know the people in the picture?"

"Yes", he replied. "I'm the guy in the middle, when I still had my legs".

It was then I nopticed that though he was in a wheelchair, those weren't his lower legs but high quality prosthesis.

I'll stop rambling but I always try to convey to ALL of them that they ARE greatly appreciated.
