He likes Angel's Envy and Wild Turkey.  I'm not a whiskey guy, I'm a beer guy.  I think Woodford Reserve is top shelf

Suggestions for a gift?

What’s your price point?

There are so many options your best bet is to just base it off of cost.

For gifts I usually go with something a little special instead of my go-to (Buffalo Trace).

Stuff like Jefferson's Ocean, any single barrel, or small batch bourbon.

If he likes Wild Turkey, Rare Breed is a solid choice that isn’t overly expensive and readily available.

Willet, Johnny Walker Blue Label, etc... are among "high class" good whiskeys. I wouldn't turn down the most simple Knob Creek either. Whiskey is whiskey. I think any gift is thoughtful don't overthink it. God.... willet had such good floral overtones to it. It's harder to find by me now.

If he likes Wild Turkey,  get him a bottle of Rare Breed
Link Posted: 4/24/2024 6:55:15 AM EDT
[Last Edit: pdm] [#8]
How does he drink it? Mixed as in a Manhattan, on the rocks, neat?

Mixed any of the mid shelfs will do….Bullet Rye is good for that, but so is buffalo trace, knob creek, Makers, and so on….

Blanton's is flashy and people think it's a good whiskey because of the fancy bottle so that makes a nice gift.

As for neat or on the rocks you really can't beat a nice Irish whiskey. Some folks enjoy blended as well such as Crown.

For gifts I usually get a nice bottle from one of the local distilleries. It's just booze….Don't over think it.

Is woodford reserve not top shelf? It’s much better than Buffalo Trace and Bulliet.

I always recommend 4 Roses Small Batch or Single Barrel. Both very smooth.

Agree with the recommendations for Wild Turkey Rare Breed or a Russell's Reserve Single Barrel since he is a Wild Turkey fan.  Both are great and aren't terribly difficult to find.

If you can find a Private Selection Russell's Single Barrel as previously mentioned that would be even better.

Woodford is solid, but I've never considered it Top Shelf.   I think more along the lines of EH Taylor / Stagg,  Barrel,  or several of the Single Barrel varients of middile shelf offerings

When I gift a bottle, it's always Russel's.
It never disappoints. A very under rated bourbon.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.  I have the same bourbon taste and he should really enjoy that.

This is about 60-80 in Japan but it’s an Asia only release of wild turkey. This is somewhat inflated from secondary (usually 150), but you can likely have this shipped to your door and it’s damn good.

Wild Turkey 12yr

Alternatively, a Russle’s reserve single barrel store pick may be available at any of your local mom/pop that does store picks or something like Total Wine too

I like Blanton's or WL Weller.  EH Taylor is a great choice as is one of the Old Forrester bottles.

As stated numerous times, Rare Breed or Russell's Reserve from Wild Turkey are great options.

If you go to a locally owned store, a lot of times they will have a store barrel pick Russell's Reserve, and they are almost always fantastic (I have never bought one I did not like).

One other mentioned Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, which is a great one too.

ETA- just read your original post with the details about your boss and how he is being let go.  Sounds like a genuine stand up guy.  Hope you still stay in touch with him!

Four Roses Small Batch Select or Single Barrel.

If you want to splurge and support a great cause, Mike Rowes Knobel Whiskey. Get the Rickhouse Gift Box and he will get a bottle signed by Mike Rowe.

Four Roses is really damn good.

Four Roses and Woodford are about the only bourbons I like.  If I'm drinking whiskey, it's irish - yellow or green spot, knapagogue, red breast, etc.

You mentioned Angel's Envy as one he likes.  They do a bunch of special, finished in X wood releases.  Naturally, for more money.  See their website for examples.  In addition, this AI-looking blurb on them; at #6, mentions a frou-frou version that was elevated in Japanese wood, comes in a hand-done crystal decanter, etc...for like $350.  God knows what it is now.

Someplace like a big Total Wine, or a local high-end liquor store, should have some of these.  Or others.

Budget definitely plays a role.

My default go-tos for a novice bourbon drinker are Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond $48, Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye $60, Old Elk Wheated $62 and if you can find it, Colonel EH Taylor which MSRP at $42 but generally you don’t see it on the shelf that cheap.

ETA: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select is pretty good and the Jack Single Barrel Barrel Proof (gold label) is excellent but the barrel proof is a little hot because of the ABV%. You shouldn’t pay more than $65 for either.

I was also going to suggest Willett Rye 4year. It has a really complex taste and sooo smooth. My kid gives me crap that I keep drinking the bottles by myself and he doesn't get any. I feel a little bad because he is always sharing his expensive cigars, but not that bad.

Definitely the correct pick since you know he already likes the standard WT. Nice enough for a gift, but also commonly available and not too outrageous of price in case he really likes it (he likely will, very much) and wants to make it a regular purchase for himself moving forward.

It's my "go-to" bourbon. Neat, rocks, dash of bitters, or in an old fashioned, it's excellent no matter how you prefer to drink it.

If you don't want to get a bottle, look for the whiskey smoking kit. Or nice glasses.

Or find a small brand like Wyoming Whiskey or Redwood Empire.

That's about the going rate unless your local Sam's Club carries it. Used to be ~$40 most places.
