ARF Runners/PT guys and gals, where do you draw the line and slow down, cut distance, take "walking breaks" or........ not run at all?
I'm 5' 11" 155lbs and do 3-5 miles a day. |
I ran my first ultra a few weeks ago...it was 104 when I finished.
I'm probably not the audience you want. |
I run on the treadmill with the AC and TV on. Ain't nobody got time to be running outside.
I'm a casual/fair weather runner. When it gets above 85 running gets less enjoyable at this altitude. My form gets poor and I feel like I am forcing it. I love running when it's 45-60, like the lungs are pushed by a turbocharger!
It's been in the 90s regularly over the past couple weeks so I have been doing weights in the cool basement instead and loving it. |
Run with a CamelBak / Nathan running hydration bag. As long as you stay aerobic and hydrated, there shouldn't be a problem.
I passed a church sign clock about an hour ago that showed 110 on my bmx bike after riding a couple hours and I'm 53
This is variable for me. Usually I don't run if it is 55F-60F or warmer. I'm thankful that I live in the Northwest USA.
I've been waiting to run until after 8:00 p.m. when its down to ~95*F.
The heat doesn't so much get to me, it's the humidity.
I can run in heat as long as I keep hydrated...but when it's humid, it just sucks all the energy out of me. Give me 100 degrees with no humidity over 85 degrees that's heavily humid. My 5k/3 mile time in the Marines was always around 17:30-18:15 in Southern California...I'm a decent runner. Soon as we traveled to SE Asia/high humidity jungle...I could barely get under 20 mins even after a few weeks of being acclimated. Nothing worse than being drenched while warming up/before you even start the run. |

IDK, I ran last month in a couple 95 degree days with 80% humidity in armor for 5 miles each day. Felt good
Did 7 today but it was only 80ish I don't know if I've not run because it was too hot. |
From late May to mid-October most years.
The afternoon temperatures will hit 95-110 degrees and that's not only uncomfortable it's stupid dangerous. I'll go out to jog in the morning before sun up when the temperature is still in the 60's or low 70's. |
90 degrees is about it for me. I keep my runs short time wise, 20-30 minutes is enough to stay in decent cardiovascular shape. Running in the woods so I'm in the shade keeps the sun off me.
When preparing for the most important timed run in my life I would wait until noon or 1 PM to run just so it would be the hottest. I'm pretty sure between air temp & humidity the heat index had to be somewhere near 100. The route I was running on was 1 mile out & 1 mile back. A few times I got to the turn around and didn't think I was going to be able to make it back.
FWIW when I took the actual timed run it was in the low 60s and no humidity and I felt like I was flying. It was the fastest 2 mile time I ever had. |

It gets unpleasant for me above about 80 degrees (largely due to heat/humidity/altitude). I'll still run, but I'm likely to slow to a walk after about 1-1.5 miles. When it's cooler, I'll go 3-5 miles.
However, my first 5 mile run was near 90 degrees in Arlington, VA, but we were near sea level rather than 3,000 ft. And the alternative activity was studying for the bar exam. |
I run in the early mornings or late evenings in this bullshit summer heat. I've always read that you should make adjustments to your running (slow down, cut distance, run/walk, etc) when it gets over 80 degrees.
Rarely. Exercising in the heat is more beneficial than in the cool.

In SC, it is too hot to walk outside the door.
Like my dog, I only run to the dinner table. |

When it gets into the high 80s to low 90s with 80+% humidity, I'll shorten the distance ~20% and run slower. Sometimes I'll run a longer route that I know has drinking fountains. If It's going to be that hot out for a while, I just run late at night or early in the morning.
ETA: I'll run in the 100s back West, but it's drier heat. |
7.25 yesterday and the longest run I've done since my son was born 5 years ago. It was hot and humid, but I don't recall the temp. I'd guess 99+. I have no idea what was going through my head when I kept going and I don't care to do that again. I'd say anything over 100 and high humidity is a no go for me.
I prefer below 100 but sometimes I don't have that luxury. I can't wake up early and run, it must be after dark in the evening.
I run two miles 2-3 times a week. Right now it's been in the upper 90's, so I have been running a mile, then walk 50 feet every 1/4 until I'm done. Increases my time by about 45 sec/mile. I've plowed through the heat a few times, but I'm not in my prime, and don't want to pass out or get hurt as I run in an isolated area.
I'll run here when it's over 100 but only short distances. 1/4-1/2 mile at the most.
I really don't have a too hot, I just tailor my run to the weather. In the summers out here I usually run at night and if its below 95 when I start I'll do distance run. If I'm running with the sun out or if its warmer than 95, then I cut my run down.
If it's over 90, it's too damn hot to run. Under 88, too damn cold!

Just do it like Galloway and run what you can and walk the rest. He made a career of it - and it has worked well for me in AZ.

I'll get a wave or a thumbs up once in a while. My wife even runs in an old small interceptor. Weighs 7 lbs. My plate carrier is slick with an elastic cummerbund. Allows me to breath. 12lbs iirc |

I'll ride my road bike hard for 2 hours when it's 102ish.
you need to stay well hydrated; other than that, if you feel ok, keep running. |
I did a mile at 98* the other day. Absolute bullshit humidity too. I stopped at a mile and just walked back. I'm huge mangina though
