Sold my 2003 Tundra with 245,000 miles unexpectedly this week, and even though it never had any issues, it was getting long in the tooth and cant fit 2 baby seats.
I like the 2010 and up F-150's, so I searched there first. I need 4wd, Crew Cab, and I'd like to have under 125,000 miles or so (I'd stretch it a bit, but not much). Ideally I'd like to have an Ecoboost in this truck I need, however there just arent many in my area that have this engine in the price range I need to be in (under $21,000). So I've narrowed it down to a few options I seem to be finding consistently on the local sites and autotrader.com. A) 2010 F-150 Crew 4x4 Lariat, but with the 5.4 Triton B) 2011/2012 F-150 Crew 4x4 XLT, with the 5.0 Now I use my truck for work, but I dont tow a ton. Once in a while I'll tow my tractor (about 6000lbs with trailer), maybe a 2 horse trailer, *very* rarely my Bobcat 763 short distances. My small Tundra did all this just fine most of the time. It seems like the option of the 5.4 is that it is a torquey down low engine, but a little antiquated. The 5.0 seems faster and more modern, but makes its power up high. MPG #'s seem to be similar from what I've researched. So the question is,all things the same (miles, condition, price etc), would the 5.0 engine be enough to go up a year but down to an XLT trim level, or would the Lariat be enough to make up for the 5.4? The XLT seems well equipped, but there is something to be said for a sunroof/heated seats/good stereo etc. My wife and I did just buy a 2011 Epedition 5.4 Limited, and like it just fine. Whats your opinion? Would you go with the 2010 5.4 Lariat, or the 2011/2012 5.0 XLT's. |
|
5.4's are ABSOLUTE DOGS. Crappy mileage, and no power. The Newer Ford 5.0 and 3.5 EB are light years ahead in power and fuel economy.
Of the older trucks, the GM 5.7 and 5.3 are great engines. |
|
I would go with the 10 5.4. Search will reveal 11s and 12s were troublesome. I have owned 2 5.4s. First went over 300k then traded. Current work truck is a 10 super crew 4x4 xlt 5.4 127k and going strong. I would not trade my 10 for an 11 or 12. Thats just my opinion.

Get the 5.0. I've had the 5.4 and currently have an F150 with the 6.2.

I got an 08 4x4 XLT with the 5.4. It had 119,000 miles and is up to 130,000 now. Haven't towed anything with it yet but have taken it on a lot of camping trips and haven't had any issues. It has plenty of HP for me.

I have a 2011 5.0 Lariat and really enjoy it. 15.5-16mpg city.
I drove a lot of similar year and trim package trucks and browsed every forum related to the trucks. Everybody seemed to have some kind of problem somewhere, after all, it's man made. No troubles so far. |

The 2010 F-150 with the 5.4 I just traded in gave me 120K trouble free miles. The 5.0 in my new truck is a stronger engine though. Earlier 5.4's had some issues but the last few years were good.

Not a ford guy, but i know several. They all would take the 5.0 over the 5.4 any day.

For the love of god get the 5.0
I won't touch a ford with those BS triton mod motors. I've extracted so many broken plugs out of them that just seeing one makes me want to punch someone. |

5.0. XLTs are pretty well equipped. All the fancy stuff on the Lariat is extra stuff that potentially could give you problems as it gets older.

Most xlt's have center consoles. We just bought a new 16 xlt and had a hard time finding one with the front bench seat. To me it sits just as good and we need the extra seat from time to time.

My main concern with the XLT is the center console seat thing. I like center consoles, not flip forward seats. How annoying is that? Also, hows the stereo? Decent? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

Too many are poorly maintained with oil that doesn't meet ford spec and consequently have major head problems. Ecoboost engines have their own issues, typically related to improper care required by such an engine. |

He knows his stuff. I've heard about the 5.4's and spark plug issues. If it were me I'd buy the newer truck on principle. |

I agree, I'll add that my 08 5.4 only made it 191k (with regular maintenance and using premium oil) before starving the heads of oil. The Jasper rebuild runs better, but is still slow and drinks fuel. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

You claim an impossibly high mpg number, double what anyone else claims. Then when called out, you say it's actually a bit lower, but still 50% better than anyone else ever. My father has a 2010 platinum with the 5.4. 160k miles. He has changed the fluids and is on his second set of Michellins and one new battery. He has literally done nothing else to it for maintenance or repairs. Just keeps going and going. Averages 16-17 mpg in mixed driving.
ETA: 170k miles. |

my 2004 5.4 2WD got 16mpg highway @ 70mph, maybe 18 with a tail wind. I hand calculated it.
Cam phasers were an issue for some years, but I'm not sure if that was ever fixed. |

The 5 liter is a better engine. More powerful, better fuel economy than the 5.4
I'd buy a truck with a 5.0 before a 5.4 3V. |
|
So it seems like the consensus is the 5.0 is worth getting the less optioned out truck rather than have the more optioned truck and the 5.4?

View Quote That said the 5.0 is a more modern engine than the 5.4. If the xlt had the options you want then the newer the better as there are some well optioned "lower" packages that are basically equivalent. If I have to drive it,I want the comfort features. If its a work truck then who cares. |

I had a 2001 f150 with 5.4
never towed anything with it but it ran, it cooked its oil seals and started leaking oil. The later 5.4s were known to have great difficulty removing bad spark plugs but there is a tool kit from lisle that makes it easier. They are underpowered compared to a modern engine but parts are cheap and readily available. Fuel economy is about 14 on HWY. If you are gonna tow think about getting an F250 with a 6.0 powerstroke. |
