Anybody remember Truck Trader?  This little book was updated every two weeks and was probably 50-100 pages full of for sale listings, just of 1/2 to 1 ton trucks.

I've seen "cash for clunkers" blamed as the culprit for the used automobile market but is that really it?

In reality, isn't it more likely that the market is so tight because nobody owns a truck long enough to get the title?  They either trade it in, or it gets repo'd?  Even on Craigslist, the vast majority of used trucks that are less than 10 years old or with less than 100k miles are sold by dealerships not by private parties.  Most of the trucks sold by private parties are beat to shit with 150-200k miles.

What gives?

I'm looking for one right now, ideally a Tacoma, but I'll probably just get another 4runner since there's more available (and cheaper for almost the same vehicle).

I think cash for clunkers took away the older ones, but if you're looking for something less than about 8 or 10 years old, its because people just weren't buying new trucks then. First it was just gas prices, then it was the entire economy. You can look at the new production numbers and see a drastic decline.

The new truck market is insane price wise so people are not trading in or selling their trucks they keep them till they die.
I keep wanting a new truck but ill be damned if i am paying $28k for a work class truck with the same equipment that my 11 year old truck had that i gave $15k for new in 05.
11 years and the price went up $13k for the same truck.

They are south of the border. Mexico, Central America, etc.  For real, their economy gets better more clunkers go south and live a second or third career down there.

Don't you know economy is great and we don't drive POS.
Seriously no clue. I sold my 10 yr old Pathfinder for almost $9,000. I was floored how much I got.

This. Back in 04 my dad bought a brand new 3/4 ton loaded out for 35k. New f250s go for around 55 now, with similar options. Trucks are the new luxury cars man, so the people who need them for work end up hanging on and fixing the ones they already have.

I have no idea whether "Truck Trader" still exists in magazine form, but it's available online.  Like craigslist, you can filter by private party.  Unlike craigslist, it costs money to use, so most people don't.

A massive amount of used trucks trade hands everyday down here.  Clean well taken care of trucks priced right dont last a day listed for sale before they are gone with cash.  The multiple different yard guys that cut in my neighborhood have rung my doorbell and asked if I wanted to sell me truck (2004 F150).  Between facebook and craigslist I see so many used trucks for sale.  Like any good deal you have to have cash and be ready to show up and buy.

I have an 07 F-150 4x4 Crew XLT that I bought new.  It has 180,000 on it but still looks and runs good despite lots of off-roading. I would love a new truck but mine's paid for and I don't want a $400-500/mo payment. So I put new brakes on it and hope it keeps rolling.

I think that is the toughest range to pick up private party.  It seems most of those trucks go in on trade.  For the most part, the majority of people who get a new truck every few years live on perpetual loans so they are not selling their previous truck for cash and just trade them in.

My beater is a 2000 GMC Sierra. Zero interest in selling it, it serves a purpose.

I imagine that this is the normal situation. They land in the possession of owners that will keep them until they die.

I like to get a 'new to me' used truck every 12-18 months, and make a little money doing it. The last two I've sold the buyers told me they were going to Mexico with them (both Toyota tacomas).

My 99 F-250 has only got 197k on it.  It just getting broke in good.  With insane new truck prices I'll keep it another decade or two.  No salt in GA.

Truck Trader isn't very good to begin with. I assume you're in the Intermountain West, try looking at ksl.com for Utah listings.  I've never had a problem finding used trucks (and I buy a lot of them)

I'll sell you my beater 2500HD CCSB 4x4 for $10k

Neat, by opting for the NV4500 you have a rarer truck with a substantially lower GCVW than a similarly equipped 2500HD with the 4L80e

I look at my 07 classic LBZ and still love the look of it, but next to the new trucks it looks dated.

I get tempted every now and then to sell it for cash, it only has 70k miles but its a little beat up on one fender and something is rattling in the front end when I go over a bump.  but I would have to dish out 50K for anything new that is comparable.  I guess Im just going to drive it till it keels over.

Used truck market is pretty stupid too.

I paid $18k for my '02 F-150 in 2005.  XLT, 4wd (with a lever which I love), 5.4 scab with 25k miles.

A comparable 3yo truck around here is still in the mid $30k's with that kind of miles.  Less than $5k off a new one (at sticker)

A $18k 3yo has the same 150k miles that my F-150 has, kinda hard to call that an upgrade, I would just as soon fix stuff without making a payment at the same time...

Sold my '97 Z71 last year for $2500. It was in great condition. I had been approached numerous times about it while getting gas. Once it hit 305,000 miles, the wife wanted me to get a new one.  Finally sold it and got a new one.
Still see it around town.

I'm driving a 10 year old diesel. When it flatlines, we'll probably just rebuild it.

I got t-boned this week at an intersection in my wife's 2011 Nissan Titan crew cab, blue books about $14k still. I haven't gotten the shop estimates, but we're hoping it's not totaled. We need that vehicle about another year so we can keep making payments on our health insurance. Needs a new door, front fender repair, new front wheel, maybe a new tie rod and steering box. I'm concerned. We were hit by a Honda at probably 10 - 15 mph, but it's gonna be expensive.

$1300/month for health insurance would buy a really nice fucking truck, or two mediocre cars.

FUCK OBAMA!!!

In '03 I bought my Dakota for $10K.

It was a 2000, had 30K miles on it, and came with a warrantee.

The fact that a 13 year old truck with 94K miles on it for $10K is seen as a decent deal blows my mind.
