Yeah, it's a fluff piece, but so what.
"D's LawnCare" hahaha CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Daron Taylor saved up for a bike and built himself a trailer to lug his lawnmower to customers of the lawncare business he started at 14. Now, the Cleveland 15-year-old has raised $20,000 from GoFundMe donors all over the country, to help him reach his goal of owning the largest lawn care service ever. D's LawnCare, which Taylor said serves eight to 10 regular customers, gained national attention after videos went viral of Taylor explaining his goals and showing off his bike. Taylor cuts the lawns with the help of his little brother, TiShawn Holmes. When asked what motivated him to start the business, he said he was inspired by others, but that he preferred to be out cutting grass and building up business than "sitting home playing a video game all day." He could use a little woodworking class.
Good for him, I know adults who don't have that kind of initiative. |
|
We'll hey, the kid has ambition, good for him.
Hopefully he sticks with it. |
|
That kid is going places.
And he's management material already: "I'm happy," he said. But he has big plans: "I want it to look like where I'm sitting on the couch and have people working for me while I'm getting rest." |

I think in RI the retards in state leg. Passed a law that mandated lic. and insurance for anyone doing lawn care.[BD
So in RI he would be SOL. Not to mention unregistered. |
|
Good for him.
My 9yo started a mowing service in our neighborhood last summer. He only had 2 lawns last year but was determined to "expand his business". This year, he had a shirt made @ CustomInk and went pounded the pavement non-stop in the weeks leading up to mowing season. He now has 10 lawns on a weekly basis and has done quite a few for folks on vacation. He's made $2k this summer - mowing. He bought himself a trimmer & spends about $6/week on fuel. Proud of him, showing some serious drive! |

Don't worry, the IRS and state tax commission will put a stop to that post haste. And if they don't, some ass hat customer will sue him out of business for some trivial mistake that he or his brother made.

TiShawn?
What the fuck kind of name is that? What's wrong with just Shawn? Or Sean? But TiShawn? WTF? Good on them though for actually doing something good as opposed to illegal. |
|
Didn't read ,but why do you need a trailer for a lawnmower?
It has wheels on it already. Tie a rope around the handle and to the seat post. Bam. Instant trailer. |
|
That kids has enthusiasm and motivation.
Don't worry, municipal authorities will assuredly find a way destroy that. |

I hope he has a business license, is bonded and insured, and any other red tape that government can throw at him....

How much do you make?
Well, it's cash only... How much? Fort... er twen... 5 thousand dollars. I'm guessing some of his buddies are going to roll up on him, take his mower, beat his ass, and rob him after watching this video. |

I remember being dropped off in a neighborhood with my lawn mower, a can of gas and a broom.
I would go door to door seeing who wanted me to mow their lawn. It's how I saved up to buy my first car. |

Good to see a kid with initiative these days. I hope he succeeds.
But how long will it be before the local bureaucrats shut him down? Back in the early '50s, Popular Mechanics had plans for a bike trailer and hitch. A friend and I made them and greatly expanded our summer lawn mowing ventures. They paid off well, too. We could easily make clear 4 or 5 dollars a day cutting 54' X 108' lots for 75 cents. That was big money for a 13 year old kid when the Saturday matinee cost 15 cents, a bag of popcorn was a dime, and a Coke a nickle. |

View Quote That is exactly the way I did it when I was a kid. Strapped the gas can to the mower too. Most of my customers paid me $5 to mow their lawn, I had about 10-12 lawns to mow every week when I was 8 or 9 years old. Didn't need no stinking gofundme, all I wanted was a new bicycle. |

I actually saw him interviewed by a passing motorist that had pulled over. Kid explained how he made it, and then gave the guy a card like a true businessman would.
He has ambition and I would love to see more kids his age getting involved in entrepreneurship |

My little minion (dads godson) is 15 and has a Honda 50 he restored to tow a lawnmower on a trailer he built.

Glad to see a teen working for something. If he keeps that attitude up through the rest of his life he will be very successful.

Why has no one taken offense to this obvious cultural appropriation?

I did it as a kid. I've known other kids who did it too. Used to be a somewhat common thing at one time. Good to see some kids don't wanna grow 3 chins in front of the Xbox.

Good for that young man to go out and get work, rather than expect "Every Thing" to be delivered to him on a platter just for being a special snowflake...
That is how a person gets ahead. See a need, see a problem, figure a way to overcome it, work hard and reap the reward justly earned... BIGGER_HAMMER |

Around my house it's all adult men with trucks and zero turn mowers. One big landscaping outfit does 90% of the houses in my neighborhood. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I'd let him mow my yard. Might even put together a better trailer for his equipment too. I like kids with initiative. |
|

I like that he is going out to earn money by working hard. Don't know why he has a gofundme page though. He doesn't need that.

That kid will probably do a better job than the zero turn guys. I've had several of them and they are in such a hurry that they scalp the high spots, generally use the same entry and exit points every time, and frequently transfer disease between yards. |

My UPS delivery guy was telling me he had to move a large pile of decorative rock at his house and offered the neighborhood kids $15 an hour and a pizza lunch to help and no one took him up on it.

There is an ex con here in town that started that way and he has a fleet of equipment (think new Ram pickups and Toyota Tundras) and trailers etc and dump truck mowing and doing landscaping. ETA: I started when I was 8. I walked every where. push mower and gas can in one hand and trimmer and water jug in the other. I had about 12-15 customers a week for about 10 years. |
