And it was a lot of fun.

I had to learn some new skills (ie, how to use a lathe), and I hit some hiccups along the way, but as of now I'm super happy with the end product. It may not sound as good as a high end suppressor (I genuinely don't know--never shot anything else before), but for the $230 or so that I have into it, I am pleased with the suppression.

I built it off a titanium SD Tactical D-tube, and it's a .30 cal. The baffles are all stainless steel freeze plugs that I drilled out to 1/8", pressed with a homemade ~60 degree cone made from an old drill bit (because I'm too cheap to spend $30 on a real one ), and then drilled to a final diameter of about 0.368" for some wiggle room. I'm using a VSR to keep the stack tight.

It will mainly live on my LMT 10.5 SBR, but I'll also swap it around other rifles as needed (I also have a Pilot 2 for the 22lr's so this will be centerfire only). I'm in college and on a limited budget, and I can't exactly afford commercial cans for every rifle, so this will have to do for now.

Here's some pics and a video of 4 different guns suppressed vs unsuppressed. Video quality isn't fantastic, but you get the idea.

All parts together before drilling:

My neighbor's lathe I learned how to use for drilling:

Tube in the lathe with the endcap ready to be drilled out:

First hole:

Then I used this little homemade cone to form them into a cone. Ideally I would want a 45 degree cone to follow up with:

After forming. Not as deep as I would like, but I'm still learning here:

All of the parts lined up after shooting some. The top right is a failed endcap. I'll cerakote it at some point, but for now Aervoe is all I have.

My LMT and M16A2 Modern Musket:

I built this thing the day I got approved.

It was definitely a learning curve, but I also have another one pending that I'll use for handguns, so I guess this will teach me what works and what doesn't work for when I build my second.

My sons and I have been discussing registering a tube and trying to 3D print various baffles.

I'm in for $200.

I don't know jack diddly squat about working with metal or wood, but one day I'd love to have a garage big enough to store the tools necessary to figure it out.

I've built three myself. Still have some problems with the end caps loosening up after heavy use.

They do suppress suprisingly well though.

Interesting use of the spring instead of spacers.

I'll look for the packaging in a little bit. I saved it for this exact reason.

ETA: Spring is a VS-1118 valve spring made by Melling Auto Parts. Fits in an SDTA D-cell tube perfectly.

You've never heard of Chacos? They're a custom red/white/blue pair. They're the best open-toed shoes for outdoors stuff here in the mountains/rivers.

Spring keeps baffle stack tight so they don't rattle around and send bullets and suppressor pieces in unpredictable directions.

It's actually a pretty simple process. You don't need a lathe. A drill press is nice, but a hand drill and vice grips are all you really need. Jump in!

We have a nice DIY suppressor subforum here under the NFA section of the Armory.

SDTA forums have also been really helpful to me. F1 cans are quickly gaining popularity, so tons of creative new designs are being done fairly regularly. Keep an eye on forums and you can get some great, intuitive designs that others may not have thought of yet.

You do not have a failed end cap. If you did, that would be against the law.

A spring is not ideal.

You are building a wall between you and knowledge...stop it.

You're better than halfway there already.  Learn to run the rest of the lathe and watch impossible fall away into projects you will never get to.

Fools think engineering has disciplines.  It doesn't...it has vertices, edges, and faces.

Build a ladder or a battering ram...but don't let the wall keep you out.

I'm not super creative, so this was a pretty big step in the first place for me. I still have an 8" .46 can pending (to clone the SiCo Hybrid) so that's gonna be my next project later this year.

I should've known!

I'll be seeing you guys in that forum soon. I have been wanting to build a can for years but I just never looked into it. I need one for my .458 SOCOM's, a .30 cal would be nice as well as a .22. This could be addictive.

I did mine with an SD Tac 5.6" Ti Tube. Sloppily pressed the FPs in a few minutes and threw it together. To the ear it sounds about the same as my buddy's SiCo Omega.

Weighs 15.6oz. Just over 6" OAL. Got it hot the other day. Didnt blow up. So, thats cool.
