Think acid wash patina on tool steel. |

I finally got brave enough to re etch this Kershaw tyrade that I reground a couple of years ago.
I was worried that the ferric chloride would hurt the brazing, which appears to be copper based. It probably would have if I left it in long enough but all it did was make it more copper colored. Attached File |

Does it feel good in the hands? What is your weird obsession with how everything feels in your hands? It's getting creepy. A. Trying to find something positive about the knife. For example, the Walther PDP is not an attractive gun. It is fugly. However, it is shockingly good in the hand and shoots quite well. It is possible, that despite the knife not being attractive, and not looking like it would feel good in the hands (thus preventing it from being a truly useful knife), that it just might feel better than it looks. The Micro-Tech MSI is an example of that. I don’t find it aesthetically pleasing, but it feels good in the hand which means a person is more likely to use it. I know you watched “Forged in Fire” and hung on every word Doug Marcaida said. 2. I think you’re grumpy the boss didnt give you a raise and you’re taking it out on me. |

View Quote Thanks! The style is definitely from a different era. I'd say it was at or just past the peak Ken Onion period at Kershaw ('09). At the time, beefy folders were popular and Kershaw was making the composite blade versions of a few popular models. I thought it was a cool idea and I have a few. (I used to be a Kershaw fanboy) I have enjoyed the knife a lot more since I reground the blade because it was super thick behind the edge and the factory primary grinds were very uneven from side to side. I don't remember exactly what the thickness was before, but I think it was like. 050"-060"and it always cut like garbage. I evened up the grinds and thinned it to ~.020"bte and it's been a much better performer. I have to be in the right mood to carry it these days but it's one of the few folders I have that I have done any work on. |

I always wondered why they used two steels that could stand on their own (this one is 154cm with a D2 edge) instead of some bs steel with a good edge and if they used a brazing method that was hotter than the austenitizing temps or if the parts were heat treated and then brazed together. Also, I wonder if they did the thickness of a single blade or if it was like a loaf with pieces sliced off into blade stock. |

I wasn't sure about the blue, despite it being my favorite color, with the bronze, until Sy sent me a link to a review with patina pics and it looked great. The blue is also more subdued in real life; I think most pics are enhanced so it looks quite a bit brighter. It fits almost perfect with just moving it in to the first slot on the clasp, but still a little loose, so once my link tool gets here I'll try removing one link and then it should be just right in one of the 5 available clasp slots (or whatever they're called). |
