Enough of this 9 vs 45 shit.
9mm will fuck some shit up
.44 mag ain't shit compared to a 12 gauge or AR-15 |
When you have the choice, .44mag without a doubt. (not to cast any disparaging light on the beautiful .357mag cartridge, though)
.44 mag is perfect for anything two or four legged. 44 special is a great soft or practice load, and .44 shot shells are proven snake and varmint rounds within 8 yards. Its highly versatile.
Both.
But I voted .357 just because .38 sp is so much more available than .44 sp as a practice / plinking load. |
Semi Auto king = .460 Rowland
Former revolver king = .44Magnum Both are plenty of "gun" for a hand gun. IMO anything more powerful in a revolver has a very niche use and purpose, as you probably ought to be using a rifle at that point. Anyway, if you reload, .44 magnum all the way! |
If you're a man you will shoot .44 magnum, unless you regularly suck big massive greasy dicks with powdered corn flower dust.

For a handgun? .38/ .357 for me.
I'm not a fan of the recoil in a .44 Mag in a pistol. But I do like a lever carbine in .44. |
Since there generally isn't much of a difference in capacity, I'd just go for the 44mag.
I have a .357 snub nose, that while it makes a big flash and a bigger boom, part of me says "That's it?" after shooting it. |
.44 Mag + action pistol range + bowling pins equals a fun afternoon.
If I can just have one, .357 all day long. Much better CCW options. Or eight rounds in an N-frame.
If I'm allowed to use .44 Special when I want Ill take the .44 magnum.
And, you didn't even state..............
"What needs killin'?" Aloha, Mark |

What ultimately RULES between these choices - stuff like Buffalo Bore loadings in .44mag. Just sayn.

357 magnum owner here.
Back in the day 38 special was cheaper than 9mm auto, so that was a plus. Generally 44 magnum was noticeably more expensive than 357 magnum. 9mm ammo wasn't as good as it is today, Glock wasn't yet everywhere, so a 357 magnum revolver with a 4 inch barrel was a very good multipurpose purchase. Fast Forward to today. 9mm premium ammo is really really good, reliable and trusted semiautos are everywhere so the 357 magnum isn't the standout defensive handgun it once was. It's still good, but other options have equalled it or surpassed it. 9mm plink ammo is now cheaper than 38 special so as your main range toy, it's out too. To me this leaves 357 in two rolls....hunting revolver and big bang range toy. 44 magnum wins both of those categories, and ammo price isn't enough to make the 357 an economic alternative. Get a 44 magnum if you have other centerfire handguns. Get a 357 if you don't |

Okay guys, let's go old school. Get out your ballistics charts and associated loadings books. Yes, they are both beautiful American cartridges.

AND....waiting for the .454 Casull guys to chime in, and set us all straight. (and yes, I have a DE in .50AE, with lots o' hoarded cartridges )

Contrary to popular belief you're not going to do anything with a 454 Casull you can't do with a 44 magnum. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I voted for the .357 Magnum. Since the rules state I can either have the .357, or the .44 but not both.
However, I did not see anything about not having a .45 Colt, or Casul along with the choice. That is why I selected what I did. Because my next one is the .45 Colt. (BTW, I have both .357 Magnums and .45 Colts, but no .44 Magnum.) |

As great as the .357 magnum is, it doesn't hold a candle to the performance of a stout .44 magnum load.
Both are great cartridges but I'm partial to .357 for carry and economy and it works fine on deer sized critters. If I needed a larger caliber for bigger critters then I'd buy a .44 (if I didn't already have a .45lc).
I voted .357 'cause .44 Mag (Model 29) is a bitch to shoot with full-power loads
Yeah, I'm a wimp. |
