How would the politicians be able to get cash bribes without cash?

Of course they don't want you using cash, they can't track you and/or what you buy.

There is a bigger downside to a cashless society than with a cash society when we see the government routinely hacked.

Well, I am not convinced that the grant of authority to Congress to coin money allows the issuance of paper money. I think that people less cranky than I might be dubious about the authority of Congress to create 1s and 0s.

Not just that but trying to get correct change from people is especially when you give them some extra money to make the change they have to give you an even amount.

IMHO, we're headed for a cashless society w/a govt digital currency that allows govt to monitor, tax and approve/disapprove all transactions. It's all about control.

One of the things I always loved about living in Reno: cash a check anywhere (casino or a bank) and they didn't even ask, just counted out a stack of hundreds.

I could stop by a 7-11 at 2am and buy a $10 bottle of bourbon with a $100 bill and nobody would even bat an eye.

Us going to cashless is less about government control than it is convenience for the exchanging parties.

I would think the credit society based on electronic transfer information is more at risk than those who use hard currency.

Galatic credits. When that day comes people who want to do stuff under the table will have to barter using alternative "hard currencies". In prison when they made the facilities tobacco free, inmates just used top ramen packets as defacto currency.

I remember back in the 80's my BIL would go cash his check at Sam's Town in Vegas and he would "spin the wheel" for free to win as much as double your check. He would walk in and cash his check and turn around and walk straight out and never spend a dime. I can't recall if he eve won.

Absolutely! Cash the paycheck and they'd give us a handful of drink tokes hoping we'd gamble while we were drinking - we never did, but we always managed to to have four or five beers on their dime.

Usually one of us would hit the seafood buffet on the wheel, or the $100 cash - or every great once in awhile, we'd double our paycheck. The seafood buffet and the $100 were pretty regular at the Carson City Nugget back then. Great memories and good times.

I bought my F -150 with cash, well cashiers checks, back in '05 and the salesman freaked the fuck out.

Had to go "ask the manager" and came back actually sweating and shaking.

"I have to ask you; is this drug money?"

I'm not kidding.  He asked me that.

Lief Johnson Ford. For a second I almost said, "yeah it is, what's the difference?"

I whipped out my checkbook.  Sales stiff was reminding me that hot checks are crimes.  I reminded him I was single.  He laughed.

When I sold motorcycles it wasn't out of the ordinary to get paid via paper sack full of $20s that reeked like weed.

Dumbasses don't know about form 8300 I guess

Running short on Salt, and fresh out of Nubile Wenches, I had to pay cash for my last BMW.
BMW dealer picked me up at the airport, exchanged US 100's for new motorcycle, acted as if it were daily occurrence.

We should fight this and here's why.

1) Easy to cut you off if you fall from political favor  (remember the Bourne flick).
2) Easy to find out what you're buying all the time (monitor and tracking)
3) Easy to destroy your purchase power via inflation.
4) Easy to give you a haircut (remember Greece?).

Will probably take a while to go completely cashless, but there is some talk of eliminating the $100 bill (as well as the 100 and 500 Euro notes) to burden the underworld.

Once that happens (under whatever pretense), it is only a matter of time.
