Neat photos.  It's kind of amazing how good colorization has gotten.

I've read the "fighting load" of an infantryman or equivalent has historically been roughly the same, at about 80 pounds.  They had swords and shields, or heavier rifles and ammo. We have lighter armor, rifles, ammo, and also night vision and radios.

Cool pictures. Seeing only black and white photos from way back then kinda makes it seem like life only happened in black and white. Seeing the color photos makes it seem more real if that makes any sense.

1/3 of body weight is the max combat fighting load. Historically, few have even come close to that, medieval knights and modern infantry being the exception, with both suffering from mobility issues.

Somebody went to all the time and effort to colorize those pictures and messed it up so bad.  All the leather is the same color everybody's uniform matches the shading of all the others in the picture, everything is new and clean.

Looks crappy and gives a false impression.

President Lincoln was 6'4" which was an astonishing stature at that time but is fairly typical today. But look at Lincoln and compare with his troops.

Keep in mind as well that by 1917 every Army in Europe was calling up every swinging dick that could carry a rifle.  The height/weight restrictions went right out the window VERY early in the war.

I think the ones that say Doug, are all painted in photoshop, he could try to weather some I suppose, WWII there was tons of color film taken, but only a small part released for some reason.

Yeah, anytime I see civil war uniforms on display in museums my first thought is, "I wouldn't have fit in that when I was in high school."

I was 5'9" and 135 lbs when I went off to bootcamp. Was 150 lbs 8 weeks later. I *might* have fit in the largest uniforms. Def wouldn't now.

ETA: Cool pics OP. My Dad's Dad was an ensign in the Navy in WWI. We had a pic of him in his uniform that was "colorized" by hand back in the day. I'll have to see if I can find it and scan it in. Might have gone to one of my sisters. He died the year I was born, so I have no memories of him. I do have his ID bracelet, and his first Navy paycheck.

Average male height in the USA today is 5'10"

In 1912, it was 5'8"

source: Durrell’s School Algebra (1912)

In 1776, it was 5'8"
http://www.nytimes.com/1982/04/15/garden/american-men-of-1776-said-to-have-stood-tall.html

Interestingly, the average height dropped a bit between 1776 and 1900.  The drop can be attributed to the environmental conditions resulting from industrialism in the late 19th century, coupled with the influx of (shorter) immigrants.

Yeah those guys didn't carry shit compared to modern infantry.  Just your plates, carrier, and kevlar probably weigh as much as pretty much all the shit those guys shuffled around in on a regular basis.

I'd bet just a helmet, pc and ammo current loadout is twice what any of them had on them, throw in rucks and no contest.

It always amazes me how WWI was so "in your face".  It seems like it was entirely a battle of willpower, like boxers slugging it out until the end.

I have a family friend's WWI uniform and it looks like children's clothes next to my modern uniform.  I knew him when I was a kid and don't remember him being particularly small but that was in the 80s, 70 or so years after he wore it to war.

At the rate of progress scientific understanding and discoveries just imagine soldiers in 30 years..heck they might not even be 100% human, maybe 90% and bigger, stronger, faster

Excellent pictures of WW1.  Thanks for sharing.

While not WW1 - there's a whole series on Netflix called "World War II in colour" that was definitely worth watching.  They not only had great footage - it was one of the best play-by-play explanations of the war and actions that I've seen.

When you realize what actually caused both wars, it's stunning how power-hungry politicians can lead incredibly gullible and easily-manipulated people to do horrific and self-destructive things (seemingly for their own good).  If only we could witness something like in person.  Oh wait....
