Russia deployed long-range air defense missiles at its air base in Syria Thursday in a rapid response to the downing of one of its bombers by a Turkish warplane.

Russia's state-owned RIA Novosti news agency, quoting its own reporter on the ground, reported that the shipment of S-400 long-range missiles had been delivered. They will be based in Syria's coastal province of Latakia, just 30 miles away from the border with Turkey and are capable of striking targets within a 250-mile range with deadly precision.

The deployment of the missiles came hours after Turkey released audio recordings of what it says are the Turkish military's warnings to the pilot of the Russian Su-24 bomber that was shot down at the border with Syria early Tuesday.

The recordings indicate that the plane was warned several times that it was approaching Turkey's airspace and asked to change course. The voice is heard saying: "This is Turkish Air Force speaking on guard. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading south immediately."

I am sure Israel is pleased with Obamas foreign policy plan right now.

Can't blame Putin for the show of force. Turkey  (with Zero's) blessings was providing a CAP for the FSA and now they have a great threat added to the region.

Our aircraft, plus civilian passenger craft are all in  peril anywhere near there now. Way to go zero.

Do you really think they would fire on US aircraft operating in our normal areas. Hell no. Maybe if we decided to fly uncomfortably close to their air base...but otherwise they wouldn't dare. No way...

From what has been said here, any nation that doesn't have a capable air force puts its very best people into air defense, and buys the best IADS they

can.  I'm genuinely curious as to what type of target that missile can intercept at 250 miles.  Is 250 combined range of the missile and a closing target?

What altitude can it make interception?  What type of energy does it retain?  Even if it flies Mach 5, that is four minutes of flight, and an aircraft can

do some funny things in four minutes provided it has early warning.

You avoiding incoming sams keeps you from doing what ever it was you were doing before. If nothing else it keeps you off task. You cant just sit there and defend for your entire time in the air and remain effective.  So if they can push back the  the turk F-16s from engagement ranges then i guess their problem is resolved and the sam batteries did their job. But it seems the turks are just talking shit at this point so i say fuck it,. go big or go home and see if the bear has the sack to shoot down your guys.

Claims that it tracks air and ground targets and going to low altitude won't help. Also claim that it is ABM capable and can detect and defeat stealth.

Russians field a lot of garbage, but their SAMs have always been world class. I wouldn't underestimate this thing.

lol. I've been rooting for Russian since this whole shit show started. I don't see that changing anytime in the near future.

Plus, I like their dictator more than our dictator. Their dictator is working to make his country stronger. Our dictator is a Marxist atheist who, though no believer in "allah," is a fanatical adherent of islam as a political force. The most dangerous enemy to me and my kind is in the White House, not the Kremlin.

If, 30 years ago, you had told me I would say something like that I would have laughed in your face. Times change...with startling rapidity.

Erdogan just doubled down on stupid today.

(CNN)Turkey will not apologize for downing a Russian fighter jet it says violated Turkish airspace near the Syrian border, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an exclusive CNN interview Thursday in Ankara, the Turkish capital.

"I think if there is a party that needs to apologize, it is not us," he said. "Those who violated our airspace are the ones who need to apologize. Our pilots and our armed forces, they simply fulfilled their duties, which consisted of responding to ... violations of the rules of engagement. I think this is the essence."
