Unless I missed it, most of the ships were not flying the US flag.

Is that because the photos were taken before the ships were accepted by the Navy or what?

Don't US military ships normally fly the US flag?  I never thought about it before.

From the stuff I recall seeing, I thought the Iranian navy consisted of a bunch of center console Boston Whaler type fishing boats and a couple commercial shrimp catchers like in Forest Gump seemed with some rocket launchers they repurposed from Vietnam era Huey's.

Have to ask:

While I realize that perspective can be difficult to rationalize in pictures, the cruiser and the destroyer look to be about the same size.

What is the difference?

Destroyer
Length:505 ft (154 m)
Beam:66 ft (20 m)
Draft:30.5 ft (9.3 m)

Cruiser
Length:567 feet (173 m)
Beam:55 feet (16.8 meters)
Draft:34 feet (10.2 meters)

Both nearly identical in displacement/tonnage

Your destroyer numbers are accurate, for 28 of the 62 destroyers.

Considering both of the ones present in Yemen are 510ft, I figured it'd be a fair number. I suppose you're crying about the 5 feet.

Iran has a few Kilos and Yugos (submarines) that could pose a legitimate threat.

Obviously, their competence level and technology is nowhere near ours, but under the right circumstances, they could cause some trouble before being destroyed.

Based off similar deployments, my guess is one, two at most. Unless they plan on getting dicey, that is.

Regarding types, your guess is as good as any, but odds are it's a Virginia.

If we had no subs in the water. Which is incredibly unlikely if a carrier is nearby.

That's the nice thing about submarines...you never know for sure where, and how many there are until it's too late.

The massive ensign is only flown for photo ops or special occasions underway.

I think a battle group is more likely to cause offense than a flag, anyways.
