Do you have your atp? If not, why didn't you get it when it was cheap, relatively speaking.

When are you going to get a real job? I mean, airline or something.

3000 hours and an ATP here. No desire to go to airlines as I like being home every night and the salary plus hourly is nice.

Im in the upper 40s now. Going to a Vaginal airline would be half that at best. No thanks

Home every night is ok I guess, but flight instructor pay isn't really great. Once you get out of there  you'll see what you've been missing. That would be like me flying at a drop zone for the rest of my life, no way. lol

As a former instructor myself, my wife (gf at the time), gave me a beej on a CAVU day flying home from Spring Break one day.

ETA: I was in college and irresponsible.  I sometimes miss those days, but not the pay.

Learning is probably fine.  Getting a class 3 to solo would be tricky without a waiver.  The meds is the big issue.

Same here. I never had a desire to go to the airlines. I teach/fly on my own terms.

And for much better pay I should add.

I cant complain. My technical title is an Assistant Chief per the Feds but I just say instructor. The nice thing is the salary plus hourly for crap weather days like this.

You joke but I had a run in with DHS over a student that had a persistent habit about asking how to fly across the border, under radar, are planes locked, are all flights tracked... Etc.

This btw, was a Mexican national that they approved to come take flight training.

Damn, you would never get to fly around here.  IIRC when I soloed it was 28kts, but only about 15 degrees from center line.

I ran out of rudder once on a landing, probably the only thing that ever scared me in training.

Initially the pay is much better, not by much. It doesn't take long to make more than most flight instructors, especially with how things are today. In fact, there's no question anyone flying for an airline is going to make tons more, not even factoring in retirement and bennies, than any entry level job like instructing. That wasn't meant to be condescending, just facts.

I didn't take it that way. I've got friends at the airlines. I just prefer working my day job (from home) and flying part time.

No questions here. Just a hearty kudos to you for enjoying your job. I'll bet you're good at it. My instructor was great. He solo'd me at 4-6 hours, and I got my PPL at 35.1 hours (Part 141 school). It was then that I began the process of really learning to fly. It's been years now since I last flew PIC (wife and kids came along, etc), but I'll never forget my instructor, nor will I forget those special times. I've got a good friend who's a 15 year NetJets captain, who keeps his CFI current. Any time I'm ready to resume flying... he'll be there to welcome me.

Its not for everyone that's for sure and not a bad thing. I do enjoy it most days but others are testing. We have a large Chinese student population so that is always challenging but very rewarding to watch them grow. 4 to 6 hours to solo is awesome!

Thanks for the link and information. I used to go up on occasion many years ago when I was young. The pilots would let me have the "controls" for a few minutes. They wanted me to learn to fly but I thought it was too expensive.
I was young and stupid.

Back then it was only about $5,000 to get a pilots license flying C152 and C172 aircraft.

I could do a whole thread on that cluster fuck. For weeks I was getting calls from DC asking question. But it took DHS 3 months to come to the airport to talk to the guy. By then he was long gone.
