Mom and Dad invited me, my wife, and baby up to their place in the mountains.  They arranged for us to rent, what they described as a small cabin near where their place was.  They assured us it had all the amenities that we needed to take care of the baby, kitchen sink, refrigerator, etc.  We get here and it's a little shack. The only heat is a small ceramic heater that sits on a table and a broken baseboard heater, no refrigerator for the babies milk (thank God for my Yeti cooler), the place smells funny and is nasty. There were dried blood and what appeared to be makeup on the bed sheets.  My wife, baby, and I slept in a twin bed last night, on top of the covers, all huddled up to stay warm. The baby has plenty of blankets and stuff but we only brought our pillows from home.  So now, the question is how do we leave and head back home without pissing off my Dad.  Staying else where isn't an option because everywhere is booked or $400 a night. Need some good excuses guys. What would you do?

Just lay it out for your Dad.  That's no place for folks with a baby to stay.

First 4 posts nailed it.  If it was you, maybe tough it out.  With your wife and baby there, screw that.

Dad, the place is a dump.  I can get cockroaches and bloody sheets for free at a homeless shelter.  Those are the even heated.  I'm going home.  Happy thanksgiving.  I'll make my own arrangements next time.

It's easy, "Dad, this place sucks with no heat, it's no place for a small child."  Follow up with, "Unless you have room for us we're going home."  If he gets pissed, oh well.  He should have checked the place out for ahead of time.

You don't need an excuse to leave.  You have a good reason.

What excuse did your parents give you for submitting you to such squalor?

Says yall were invited to the mountains to 'their' place, yet they want yall to stay somewhere else? In a dump no less?

WOW. Our family here don't work like that.

Maggie's Valley.

My Dad is a special kind. You just have to try and keep the peace.  Our tempers clash, there isn't a calm conversation about things like this.

No lies or excuses, just tell the truth and be on your way.

Tell your Dad the place is terribly filthy, too filthy for your child let alone your family, thank him and go home.

Be your own man and leader of your family.

Dad doesn't have to like your decision.

Wife and kids come first.

End of discussion.

pack up in the middle of the night when you dad is sleeping and just leave

next day you tell him that you got a call from the neighbor that there was a problem with your house and you need to check it out

or you could just tell him this is not a good situation for your baby

good luck

Good advice.

OP, your dad is getting fleeced by whoever rents those cabins out.  Leave, but find the office and demand a refund for your father first, then tell him you're out.  That place sounds disgusting.

Menstrual blood on the bed sheets?  Holy fuck

One of 2 things will happen: Your child gets sick or your child WILL get sick. As far as your dad's temper is concerned, it's time you wake up to the fact that he controls people with his hot temper. He's controlling YOU this way!

If you're old enough to have a kid, you're old enough to not be controlled by your father.

Does this situation, perchance, involve money? (lots of money)

Trade lodging with mom and dad; let them stay in the dump and let him vent his unbridled anger on the owner of the dump.

I have no qualms evicting poisonous people from my life, regardless of their blood relation to me.

People that love me, want me to be happy. People that expect me to be miserable so *they* can be happy need to go sell *that* shit somewhere else.

First off, It's Maggie Valley, not "Maggie's Valley."

Never been camping before? What you described to a "T" is my cabin in the mountains. We have a blast there regardless of the weather.

I'd head into town and purchase a kerosene heater, kerosene and a double sleeping bag. Next thing I'd do is quit whining and enjoy the beauty of the mountains during winter.

Get in the car, call them when you are hour on the road and tell them the baby accidentally ate a cockroach in the dump he rented for you. They were crawling all over the place. You have to get him to his pediatrician pronto and your wife to the dermatologist for the rash she got from something on the sheets.

Don't forget to mention you're coming down with a cold because the heater didn't work.

Ask dad if he only went off landlord's description.  If so, tell landlord to refund money.
