I never really intended the boat acquisition to become a spectacle, but since it has - I figured I might as well share updates for a bit!

We had a great sea trial and survey today.  For those that don't understand the term - a survey is the marine equivalent to a home inspection.  I hired multiple guys to crawl through the entire vessel, and we ran her HARD today.  We had 20+ knot winds, 3' to 5' waves in the intercoastal and inlets, and hit 6' to 8' head seas as soon as we hit the Atlantic.  We learned very quickly that stabilizer fins are your friend.  We had three laptops hooked to the engines, and they ran great.  I will send survey reports to those that requested it this weekend.  Cutlass bearings will be replaced along with service to the halon system in the engine room and a few other misc things.  Ultimately, I'm VERY comfortable with her after the team spending all day on her in moderate seas.

We had her hauled out and given a (powerwasher) bath.  Note large rudders on the stern with large stabilizer fins amidship.

One of the bow while we're at it

We had a good 21 knot run on the intercoastal

It looks like we have a green light to complete the transaction, which will occur in Bimini in late November/early December.  The gulf stream is going to be UGLY that time of year.  I'll be taking pictures and video along the way, and will post updates of course!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm overwhelmed by all the great ideas.  Thanks again everyone!  In short, we've decided to name her "Blue By You" if everything goes through.
I had form an LLC in the name of the boat before I could even complete the contract on it.  Kind of a hassle, and completely unexpected - so the again, the help was appreciated.  It turns out Natron11 submitted the idea we went with, and ironically - lives in SWFL near me, and we've met at a HTF shoot/dinner before.  While I didn't want to turn this in to a public spectacle, I will post updates and pictures as I go through the acquisition process.  I also hope to host Natron11 and his family once she's docked here, and will be sure to post updates.  Natron - you'll also notice an extra year on your account expiration date here .
Thanks again all!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have to come up with a name for my boat by Monday morning (long story), but am having a bit of creativity block.  On top of work and commercial Captain's courses going on this weekend - I'm really struggling to come up with a good name.  Help will be rewarded!!  Here's the boat:

As far as names, here are some thoughts -

  • No names to do with alcohol, drugs, or firearms.  I don't need to give the USCG or foreign navies any reason to get excited when I run past them.

  • I know we all laugh at sailboats with names like "Blow Me," but sexual innuendos aren't really my style.

  • It is important to note you and your family will be known by your boat name around the globe.  Your name is no longer Tom, Dick or Harry - it's "Captain @(#%)^%."  It gives you a moment of pause when you realize you are essentially naming yourself, your spouse and children for the next 10-15 years.

  • While I'm not really superstitious, names like "screw you Poseidon" don't seem wise.  That kind of includes names like "The Unsinkable" or similar challenges.

  • You must announce yourself to every lock operator, drawbridge owner, nearby vessel, Coast Guard operator and foreign Country with your boat name.  You really want it to be a word or two - that are easily understood.  The vessel's current name is "Peace" - not really my style, but short and simple

  • The boat is large enough to have a tender, which is fancy talk for a small boat that rides on the back of your big boat.  In my case, I'm getting a cradle lift for a 13' Boston Whaler SuperSport.  It's typical to give your tender a name. There is a concern about naming your tender and boat the same, though.  When you do name them the same and take your tender to shore, it screams "hey - my boat is empty!"  As a result, the general goal is to name your tender something a little different than your boat - but related.

So with all that said - my current inclination is "Freedom"  It's hard to imagine something more meaningful.  With that said, the age old saying that "with Freedom comes Responsibility" comes to mind.  As a result, I would name my tender Responsibility.  Thoughts?

I had thought about the boat name of "Plan B," with a tender name of "Plan C," and a throwable life ring on the flybridge with a name of "Plan D."  My wife suggests that's not as funny as it sounded in my head .  There are a ton of other ideas, but none of them stand out.  I have 48 hours to choose, though .

So here's the fodder - My last name is actually Fox.  The boat is obviously blue.  The model of the boat is a "Magellano" - named after Magellan, obviously.  It's an 'explorer-class vessel', which means she'll get roughly 2,000 miles on a tank of gas, and is seaworthy enough to circumnavigate.  With that said, I'll generally run her at trawler speeds (~7 knots).  Compared to speed boat - she's a big slow (but efficient) beast.  Names like "Maggie Blue" have been tossed around.  "Kaa-blewie" seems to be tempting fate.  Names like "knot so fast" or something with Fox have been proposed.  Nothing really stands out, though.  Any ideas??

I hate you...but congrats on an awesome boat.

For a name I think "The Blue Fox" or just "Blue Fox" would be good.  It incorporates an aspect of the boat and an aspect of you into the name.
