If you angle the cut to resemble the AK slant brake, you won't need to worry about threading the barrel.

When I cut down my AK-104 and Krink SBRs, I just used a hacksaw...and a facing tool, a crowning tool, a drill, and some cutting oil.

For the amount of money you're going to spend to end up making it right, you should probably just get a new barrel at the desired length.

You should use a drill and a long bit to go up a caliber too, while we're improving and all.
|
|
Just be sure to keep it at NFA lengths.
And hopefully you have a good bit to re crown. Good luck, and post some pics |

OP has a plan he can handle it,remember to go slow and measure twice cut once

Epic threads are not a result of OP saying "This actually might be a bad idea, I'm not going to do this..." |

If you really want to save money, send it to www.adcofirearms.com They know what they are doing, they are fast, and do amazing work. If you are really going to use a dremel to cut your barrel, I predict a "bubba barrel" will be born! Even if you cut if straight, no way you are doing a uniform crown with a handheld dremel. Send it to adco! For the children! |

Use a tube cutter to mark the barrel where you want to cut it, then use a hacksaw. Finish the 'cut' by using a flat grinding stone to square off the end. Then you can crown it.
I helped a friend shorten a shotgun barrel from 26" down to 22" - then deburred it with diamond files - and it went well, a rifle barrel the crown is going to be the hardest part... I wouldn't want to use hand tools to do that, or your accuracy is going to go into the shitter. For that kinda stuff though, even a local machine shop could help cut it down and then square off the end. You can even get them to start a crown for you, then get a crowning kit to finish it off. |

I cut the barrel and grenade launcher thing off of an SKS once. Did the crown with a dremel and then some cold blue.
looked good, but I sold it before shooting it. It was my first rifle, so being a broke newb to guns it was proudly decked out in Ncstar and synthetic stock with the built in folder. A month later I saw a hood rat walking around with it at a gunshow. |

Barrels should always be cut back from the chamber end. Unless of course you're like 97% of AR hack owners.
It should be plenty tacticool, though. |

I thought that the modern firearms community had lost its reliance on shamans and witch doctors.
Apparently not. Shortening a barrel is not difficult at all. Re-crowning that barrel is a bit more difficult, but still possible with simple tools. Why all the anxiety? |

I admire your can do attitude and look forward to the pictures.

At very least find a hose clamp and clamp the barrel at the cut point. Then you have the clamp to guide a strait edge.

And according to a very detailed write-up in a precision shooting mag some time back, the crown plays much less on performance than traditionally given credit for. they intentionally beat the shit out of a crown by denting and cutting gouges in it with virtually no measurable decline in accuracy. |

Safety Glasses. Sucks when the cut off wheel blows. View Quote +1 My experience is that it is not a question of if the disc will fly apart. It is a question of when it flies apart. Though some do seem to be better than others. It is not a tragedy when one flies apart, chicks dig facial scars, but you don't want a flying fragment to hit the eye. If you feel the need to look like Colonel Fury, just get an eyepatch. No need to actually lose the eye. |

Do you have a bench grinder? Just shove the muzzle into the grinder till you get to your length.
|

Rig the barrel up to a hand drill to spin it while you cut. Should produce a square cut.
