I don't need/want a rider. My yard is not big enough for that, but it's "pushing" it when it comes to a push mower. Right now I have a 10 year old Wally World 5hp Murray that works just fine so I don't really need a new one, but age + size of yard has made mowing more of a chore than I'd like.

I want a walk behind self-propelled one. I'm thinking one that is variable speed depending on your pace. An old self-propelled one I had years ago was too fast on some parts of that yard, and slower than I wanted on others. In some cases wrestling with it was more tiring than a pusher.

I'm thinking about either the Toro 20332 or 20376. I want something that can do a decent job of bagging/mulching leaves in the fall. I'd really like to spend no more than $400, preferably less.

Thanks

I broke down and bought a Honda.   By far, the best mower I've ever owned.

ETA...l wanted a fast mower.   I almost have to run to keep up with it.

This. HRC216.

I owned 25 of them at one point. I've tried everything. Nothing held up as well.

Toro rear drive if you have any hills if not front drive is fine. I have one with a Kohler engine. I also have a  Husqvarna with a Honda engine also a good machine. But frankly Hondas are over rated the Kohler I think performs better.

I got a Husqvarna 7021r on the recommendation of a member here.  It has a honda engine and has been excellent.

Eta: the husqvarna is my backup mower.  My primary is a toro 20057 which is only better than the husqvarna because of slightly more power.

I got out of lawn care in 2011 so my opinion in 3 years old.

For years a higher end briggs was very good.

Then they cheapened them up a bit and a higher end briggs became mediocre.

Then they got even cheaper and a higher end briggs wasn't as good as any name brand on the market. Absolute piles of garbage. I won't buy anything with a briggs.

If its not a Honda, I don't fucking want it.

My Craftsman (Honda engine) finally gave up the ghost late last year
(after 12 years hard use, best lawn mower I ever had..engine still ran,
deck cracked, wheels worn out) and had to get a new one.

This time I opted for the 100 percent Honda made mower.  LOVE IT !
One hell of a mower.

The expensive snappers (don't remember model) were the best mulcher by a long shot. We always kept snappers for the crews that had a few mulched lawns on their list. High end Hondas for bagging.

Handas are nice mowers....but..
I have a piece of shit I picked up on Craigslist for $20.
Tuned it up, sharpened the blade...5 years later, runs great.
People don't take care of stuff...that's why it doesn't ever run right after the first year.

And to the OP...riding mower with CD player and cup holder...your welcome.

The only Honda that might be in my price range would be the HRR216VKA. I believe Home Depot might have that for around $400.

Good enough?

Should I buy from them or go with a Honda dealer?

Get it, and HD is fine.  I bought mine from them - I would have bought from a local store because I like supporting small local business, but I didn't know they sold them at the time.  But HD did a fine job.

The mid range hondas from home depot are great.  I've had mine--same model as you state here (or the previous years model equivalent) and it's been great.  I've had it going on 8 years and never had problem one out of it.  Starts on the first pull most days.

Home Depot is great to buy from, good luck.  Remember for something like this that paying an extra $100--considering the length of ownership is worth it to get the model you really want.  You'll have it a long time and if you are missing a feature which would help you out, it will be missed for a long time.

I am drooling over this mower -
Toro 30 in. TimeMaster Variable Speed Self-Propelled Walk-Behind Gas Lawn Mower

The only thing stopping me?
$999 at Home Depot.
I can buy a nice can and the tax stamp cheaper than that mower.

I own a 4 year old Honda HRX217VKA.
Starts first time every time.
Not a spec of rust on it and I live in Western Washington.
The plastic deck is great.

I just did a tune-up on it, cost me $45 because I bought new blades.
Best mower I have ever owned.

It was on sale for $50 off and $50 for opening a Home Depot card when I bought it.

With a sharp blade, yes.
Also, if you lean on the mower and push it then you use less power to drive the wheels.

Hell, pushing the damn thing is what I'm trying to get away from. The grass in my backyard is really thick and bogs my 5hp B&S motor down sometimes, especially if it's a little damp. I can't cut it as low as I'd like as a result.

I've got a Honda HRX2173.  It's nice.

The lever to hold down for self propelled on a rear wheel drive mower takes a bit of getting used to (can't stop the "drive" by lifting the front of the mower).

Very happy with it.  If you're concerned with the composite deck - don't be.

Dumb question, but can the RWD mowers be backed up? Landscaping in yard dictates the ability to do that.

I found a real nice mower in the trash about 10 years ago. it would start but I could tell be the noises the motor was shot.  put it in my shed. found another mower in the trash a few years later that was similar, deck was shot.  combined the two and I have a real nice mower that's like new. I only use it once a month to clean behind the bushes.
