Dayyyaum!!
riding mowers be expensive!
2k for a tractor whose sole purpose is to cut grass... now that i'm done bitching about the price can you guys recommend ones to look into/avoid? would prefer to avoid the box stores, but where else do you shop for the damn things that have prices listed online?

Ideally I'd prefer 1k, but that seems a little unrealistic so I'd like to be around $1500-$1700 after I sell a kidney or two...

just about 1/3 acre on a gentle slope.. not too severe but enough to make push mowing a serious workout

Why not a self-propelled walk behind mower?  Ride on mower seems like overkill for 1/3 acre.  I grew up on a 3/4 acre property and we used a walk behind.

Used is my suggestion, for as small of a lot as you've got a 42" is plenty. You can find some commercial zero-turns (used) for under 2K that will still outlast big box store 'tractors' if maintained. Me, I ended up with a Deere but if I had it to do over I would go with a gently used Exmark or other zero turn.

For a yard that small and that price range I'd look at a cub cadet or husqvarna.

I have a little over an acre and I spent $3500 on a Kubota and would do it again in a second.

Buy once cry once.

Another vote for push mower. Good exercise for you and your wallet. Like $250 with a Honda engine and spend the rest on ammo.

what is wrong with a serious workout?  I paid almost 6K for my mower (commercial Bobcat zero turn) about 8 years ago and it is pretty good on slopes and I have about 4 acres to mow but if it was only 1/2 acre I think I'd just get a good Honda self propelled pusher and call it good.  The riders you see out there don't seem to justify the price and plus that is the kind of thing that will roll over on you on a slope.  But if your slope isn't enough to do that, a pusher should be able to handle it fine.

I'm sick of push mowers, I want to move up a peg or two
besides I'm over raking and bagging grass, that shit is such a waste of time.
and besides that, I want mowing the grass to take less time than it does.. aint nobody got time to waste on a push mower

DO NOT buy Simplicity.

I have bought my wife a compact tractor, MOST other riders are made for city lots and smaller, they don't hold up well.

At least not to a woman mower

I can't complain I haven't had to mow the yard in 30 YEARS.

Under $2000 you are looking at a lawn tractor.  They are all the same quality.  Just pick whatever color you like at the price you want to pay.  I would get something with a geared tranny for a little better reliability but whatever.

A lawn tractor will be more than enough for you.

Hills are going to be hard on most entry level riding lawnmowers.  Check out mytractorforum.com and look under the lawn and garden tractor section.  Those guys know their stuff.  For something that will last mowing hills, you are probably looking at 3k+.  I would look at something used.

As far as prices listed online and no big box stores....buy one of these:

OP, I have 5 acres. Very hilly and rough. I bought a troybilt HORSE XP22 last feb. So far it's a beast. 46"deck, kohler motor. It is impressive on the steep banks.around my pond. I think I paid $1700 OTD @Lowes.

Those Snappers run forever.  You'll never look cool on one though.

Buy a lightly used Snapper rear engine rider, 28" or 30". It will last you forever if you take care of it and will provide a pretty decent cut as well.

1/3 A? $2,000.00?

Why?

That's a postage stamp sized yard, and wont even justify anything at the 2k Range at the Box stores.

The little Deere 105D is only 1,500 bucks at the dealer, and is total overkill, but you get a nice new Hat for free.

The little rear engine riders are even cheaper. Cub Cadet has a decent one for 1,300 or so that ain't bad.

Just stay the hell away from the box stores.
90% of the problems with Box store mowers or any other power equipment they sell, is the dipshits that do the initial assembly and set up.

You might save 50-100 bucks, but as soon as the thing burps it's up to you to find the local dealer you shoulda bought from in the first place.
Then you have to explain why you screwed the guy out of 50-100 bucks, and hope he dosn't gouge it back out of you on repairs not under warranty.

Check around for Dealers with good used lawn mowers as well.
The Deere dealers are usually good for having well maintained 6-10yr old mowers that still have another 20 seasons in them.

Good luck!

I was out looking for my dog who had been missing, so I drove around to all these local homes. Saw a broken down riding mower out in the yard at one of the houses and asked the owner what he wanted for it.

It was a 2006 Troy-Bilt Pony.

No Battery, No PTO Engage cable, but the reason I believe it was parked was the steering shaft gears were worn out, a $15 fix for someone that can do it themselves.

He only wanted $100 for it. After getting it home I jumped it off and with a little starting fluid it cranked right up and ran great.

$200 total invested to get it mowing grass.

This.  Self-propelled walk behind is the way to go.

Mow under the wing, go with a Honda.

If you don't decide on a self propelled push mower (which you can get a nice one for 500ish), I'd go with a Craftsman.  The higher end Craftsman mowers are made by Husqvarna, and just rebranded Craftsman.  (Craftsman doesn't make any mowers).

Go take a look at them, they look the same except color.  Everything is in the same place.   You can get a new 2014 for 1699, or less depending on the model.

One big positive is the warranty, which is a 2 year warranty that a Sears Repairman will come to your house to fix anything with the mower that is not belts, blades, or batteries.

I still have a Troy Bilt Pony.  Although last summer I rebuilt a larger Deere and use that.  The PTO cable is definitely a weak point.  I was getting about 2 years out of them before they broke.  I also disabled the mow in reverse safety so that I wasn't engaging/disengaging the PTO as much.

The steering also sucks.  I am constantly tightening the bolts.

Mine is similar to this.  I bought it in 2005 and have changed the oil every year.  I have 1/2 acre and it works well.  I didn't mind the workout, but didn't like the time it took to mow with a push.

I'll sell you my Ariens 20hp 42" deck rider for $500. It has the "Blades for Life" special.

I need to drop $3500 to $5000 on a zero turn to cut my cutting time down. I have a few acres that I need to cut.

It's a toss up between the 54" and 60" decks. Not sure that the extra 8" is worth the extra $1500.

Go to an equipment auction and get an older Deere or club cadet.

Parts are still around. Most of the time they go for 250-400 depending on conditions. Way heavier then today's mtd junk. You can push snow with them, pull a trailer with them. Etc. Do some research and there might even be more attachments.

Saw a nice older - late 70s - Deere one go for 200 today.

I bought a Ariens 42" 17HP at home depot last year to replace my 25 year old Montgomery Wards Murray. So far I like it.

It can mow in reverse with the blades down, something the government fucked up and made into hassle with many newer models with its nanny state BS. Made in the US in SC. It's built a lot like my old mower from the 80's, lots of steel instead of plastic, gear drive too.

I read lots of reviews on many of the low end $2K riders and this one had mostly good reviews. A lot of others in that class scare the shit out of you to read the reviews.

Be careful.

I purchased a mower from Sears that was a Craftsman with an MTD engine and somehow the factory making the engine and the one doing the chassis didn't communicate well each other making changing my oil a PITA.  So, when I look at mowers in the future I'm going to be checking for that BIG Time.  Right now on my damn Craftsman I can only crank the nut for the oil pan to drain it about a micro fraction of a turn at a weird damn angle then I have to use this shitty plastic "bridge" part they gave me to drain the oil...it's a freaking mess every time. So, just FYI.

Used Snapper for $2-300. It will cut better than most riding mowers and it is plenty big for your purposes. A decent, large, riding mower is gonna be over $5k. I wouldn't waste my money on anything less.
