This does not sound like a good idea to me.

Don't really know the people and I have no idea what kind of stuff they are looking for.
Don't really want to get involved in some weird domestic stuff.
I really don't want them to know what my system is capable of as well.

What say you?

What should I tell them if I want to say no?

Tell them the data is only backed up for the last 2 to 3 days then wiped?

ETA: Why the fuck do they want to see YOUR security camera recordings?

If it's domestic no. If it's because of a break in then yes. And tell them the truth.

Ask them what they are looking for and approximately what time.

You look and if you see anything, you can burn a video of it

"My DVR has been down for a while. Don't tell anyone…"

It's the ole "security cameras were broken" angle.

He needs to tell you why first off. He's asking YOU for a favor remind him of that. You're at complete liberty to say NO to him at any time.

He would have to give me a general time, date and what he is looking for.

I would find the data, if it is what he is looking for, make a copy of only that, and provide it to him ....maybe, if he is nice!!

Ask them what date, time and what are they looking for. Decide if you want to make a copy of the footage for them.

It is a privacy and security risk to "let them look through" your footage. Easy to find your blind spots and study your system.

From the way you presented it and responded, kinda sounds like you have difficulty making decisions and standing behind them.

I'd ask them what they wanted and when they wanted it from.  Unless they're a friend and in which case you wouldn't be asking this, I'd look w/o them there.  If I found something I'd probably give it to them on a CD or DVD.

Only if he shows you a police report of a recent burglary or vandalism or some such. If so, maybe give a copy to the police when they come investigating.
If he's wanting to check on his wife and the postman, say no.
Don't get dragged into their personal soap opera, and don't let a relatively unknown person (even living next door) know your surveillance capabilities/limitations.

This.

If they got robbed/vandalized/whatever I'd be happy to look through the footage on that day myself and provide them with a copy of any incident.

If it's a domestic/infidelity situation, I'd politely say that the footage from "that far back" isn't archived.

We had a rash of burglaries in a beat I was working when I was younger. I noticed that the neighbors of a house that was hit had a video surveillance system. I went over and spoke with. I asked if it was possible if they could check at this time and date for a breaki in at their neighbors. Bam caught the dirt balls on camera. I knew who it was immediately.

I was able to get a warrant and arrest them. They only got probation. The owners of the system could of told me to pound sand and it would of taken a lot longer to catch the dirt balls. I would ask them what they are looking for and times. If they say something out of line walk away.

Good luck John

i'm all for being neighborly, but if he didn't clearly explain what he was looking for and why he needed to do it in the very first meeting, i would be reluctant to do it.

think about how a conversation like that should go:

"hi, i'm your neighbor.  we've had some stuff missing from our porch, and the circumstances seem pretty suspicious.  i noticed that you have a security camera looking in x-direction, and i think a prowler might have gone through that FOV.  would you mind sharing your footage from the night of xx/xx/xxxx?  if it would make you uncomfortable to release the raw footage, could you scrub through it and see if you spot anything suspicious?  i'd really appreciate it."

otherwise, i'd MMOB.

This is the answer you seek. If it's a personal domestic matter, STAY OUT OF IT. If it's a break in, he should be able to tell you the general date and time. You look first alone, and if there is anything there you can give him a copy or get involved to the extent you feel comfortable.

All these people saying, "tell them no" are what is too common today. Also, you don't know your neighbor? No wonder so much shit happens and people get away with it. I always make a point to know my neighbors. I may not be best friends but I usually get to a point where we watch each other's property.

Just ask what he's looking for and take a look. You dont have to be a complete basement dweller. I don't get how people can live literally next door to someone and barely, if at all, know their neighbors name.
