All this talk about hoarding different types of powder & primers. Hornady vs Barnes vs. Sierra; Vargat, vs. Ramsot vs. IMR. Crazy expensive ammo reloading rooms, wasted time pulling handles like an old woman pulling a casino bingo machine with her money from social security......... Sure, reloading probably was price effective 10 years ago, heck maybe even 5. But to all those getting "INTO" reloading NOW, you are wasting your TIME and MONEY!!!!!!! |

I reload because it is a good hobby... And because it increases my accuracy...
Reloading is a bottomless pit. There is always something to buy to improve... I started with a hand trimmer, then upgraded to a Giraud, for instance. Right now, everyone is hit... Things are slowly getting better... There just aren't any screaming deals out there right now. Yeah, round for round, I ~may have saved ~a little... It is a fun hobby that has helped me shoot more and more... I can't buy $500 worth of ammo... My wife would notice that. But I can spend $20 here and $20 there, and have the same number of rounds with a bit of cost-savings that I would have had if I had just spent $500 right-off... |
|
I can buy all the .45 remington or federal fmj at wallyworld for 21$ abox of 50 ... and 9mm for 13$ for federal or winchester per 50 fmj. you can't tell me reloading is cost effective, sure it would be something to mess with as a hobby but time + cost effective ,,, no its not anymore. yeh you can reload cheaper im sure, but the time it takes is not worth it, hence why i said it would be a good hobby.

Thinking of taking the reloading plunge after the Buds RIA 1911 deal, are you trying to dissuade me?

You can still get in under .30 a round for .45 at today's prices.
$30.00 @ 1400 rounds out of a pound / .02 - .03c a round 1000 primers = $35.00 / .035c a round 500 extreme 230 grain bullets = $65 / .13c a round Total cost if you reload your own brass = .18.5c - 19.5c a round If you have to buy brass then all bets are off. Its been going for .06 - .15c a piece, still potentially less than .30c a round but pushing the economic feasibility and repayment of the press and equipment out much further. |

230 gr lead 11.00 per 100.
100 primers 3.59. Powder lets say 2 bucks which is probably high. So 100 rounds costs me 16.59 a box which is close to 1/2 as much as your 29 per 100. Post a link to that price or it's BS Walmart stocks winchester white box value packs for more than 40 bucks now. Cabelas has bulk federal $50 for 100. I'll spend 20 minutes on my Lock n Load progressive to save 25 bucks, I'll get better ammo also. |

I reload .45 for about 7-10 cents a round. Casting equipment is paid for with savings from loading for more expensive calibers(like .45-70, $2/round for factory). Lead I can still get for about $30 per hundred pounds(wheelweights from an area tire shop that is still willing to sell). Brass, I have from factory ammo as well as friends who shoot but don't reload .45. Primers are 3-4 cents each. Powder? At 7000 grains per pound($20-$25), and under 5 grains per round, it adds less than a penny per round. The only other cost is my time, and my casting and reloading is done when I'd otherwise be scratching my ass. |

I can still load rifle and pistol for cheaper than I can buy it, with much better quality components.
What I can't economically reload for is shotgun. Lead prices being what they are I can actually buy shells cheaper than what I can reload for. Granted my reloads will be a lot better, but for a couple of bucks more a box for comparable shells it really isn't worth the time, and I have a bunch of money invested in equipment. |

Need to shop around and make it worth it.
I still have components (for 45 acp) I purchased during the 2008 ammo crush. Primer: .025 ($25/1000 WLP)) Case: free (who buys 45acp brass?) Powder: .015 (8 lbs Power Pistol $140) Bullet: .07 (500/$35 for LSWC185gr) $.11 for components from 2008. Components I purchased this year: Primer: .023 ($23/1000 Tula LP) Case: free (who buys 45acp brass?) Powder: .015 (1 lb Power Pistol $18) Bullet: .13 (500/$66 for plated 230gr) $.17 for components purchased 2013. Hope my math is good. I'm a product of California public schooling. |
