They're actually decent rifles and well built.
They're kind of ugly, but they are the ugly that speaks usage. Quoted:

Sure would like to have a few of those FAMAS rifles. Why? No, no they are not. Have you shot them? I have. They are garbage. Stamped flimsy dogshit. The safety and the selector are seperate levers and one of them is in your fucking armpit. Mag changes are a fucking clown show. The trigger is like a caulking gun. The sight radius is short and the sights are very high above the bore. M855 will beat them to death. French ammo is downloaded so far it will barely cycle an HK416 or a dirty M4. I've shot the FAMAS and a lot of french 5.56. Total fucking garbage. |

The earlier one got locked, the other somewhat related threads have been sidetracked. This is a great video with lots of equipment porn. There are no english subtitles though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGDIDGMcbaM I must be getting old because I like these videos that show the prepartion and supply aspects a lot more than the shootfests overlaid with loud music. Anyone have an idea what gun this is? It has a big muzzle brake on it. http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac334/david06photo/Misc/bigfrogrifle1_zps239e87cc.png looks like a 20mm |

Imagine the surprise when of the French soldiers when they were told they were going somewhere to fight, with like real bullets and stuff.

While I commend the bravery of the French troops and fully support what they are doing, it is disheartening to see how dependent the rest of the worlds militaries have become on the US for it's logistical needs.

The US commitment consists of 3 C-17s. They're being used for the same reason there are Spanish and Danish C-130s,Canadian,Brit,Qatari and Hungarian C-17s. It's all about having a coalition these days and France being see as least imperial as possible. It's not like they need the 2 Alpha jets Nigeria sent,it's about the image.Of course it gets it done faster and defrays the cost but here's a hint: we rent Antonovs from the Ukraine and Russia when we need them too. |

I was not even commenting on the 3 C-17's we are using. The French are having sever logistical issues that are limiting their effectiveness. Coalitions are nice but if you want a big boy military you need to have the ability to sustain a fight independently. Renting VS. being given something is 2 very different things no? |

one thing i've noticed is that wearing a helmet seems to be optional in the French army. i cant see any US forces being allowed on patrol w/o one.... https://moroccoonthemove.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/mali_00001-4_3_rx812_c1080x810.jpg?w=610&h=457 Interesting. Africa hot maybe? |

Look at the Brits in Norther Ireland (I think that's where somebody had the idea first...) and there's more than a few units using that technique over here as well. Gets the locals to open up a bit more. I like the idea of tasking some C-17 crews to actually carry some shit around, rather than just buring fuel to keep their hours up to par. Really doesn't bug me at all, and I've got some vested interest in our flight crews keeping their skills up, at least until one of them gives me my last lift out of this crap-hole. |

Quoted: That's what I heard too. In all the pics without helmets all the civilians are black. That means that they are in the south in a friendly area. French paras have a long history of not using helmets once they hit the ground. As was shown before, they still use the old steel pot. Generally they wear them for the jump and then stow them.

Pretty awesome that they got to do a combat jump.
Too bad the crazies still had enough time to apparently burn a shitton of historical records and other stuff. |

Yeah the US Military is only Using C-17's in support funny i heard their putting troops on the ground Near the area of Operations for Drone support for French forces.
USA TO THE RESCUE AGAIN U.S. to establish military presence next to Mali The United States has signed a deal with the central African nation of Niger to host American troops and surveillance drones to keep tabs on Islamic militants in the region, officials from those countries said Tuesday. Niger is next door to Mali, where France joined the fight against Islamic rebels earlier this month Pentagon spokesman George Little said the role of U.S. troops in Niger "has not yet been defined" - but Niger's ambassador to the United States, Maman Sidikou, told CNN that his government has agreed to let U.S. drones operate from its territory. Sidikou says his understanding of the agreement is the drones will be unarmed and used for surveillance to monitor extremist movements. He refused to discuss where in the country the drones would be based or when they will be operational. |
