Check your state laws first, many states do not allow hunting of deer with .22's.

222 is arguably the most accurate, but has the shortest effective range. 300 yards might be pushing it a bit for a good size ground hog.

22-250 is an excellent all around cartridge.  i consider it to light for deer, but that does not meen it does not work.

220 swift is a higher velocity 22 than the 22-250.  Just be sure to buy a new rifle as older ones had problems with throat wear.

I consider all of these calibers light for anything larger than groundhog, but I rarely use anything smaller than 6.5 X 55 and 8mm Mauser.

.22-250 is a great little cartridge for all sorts of critters.

I like the Swift but have discontinued using it very often for the reasons mentioned above

I got a H.B. .225 Winchester(necked down 30-30 case to 22 cal) pre 64 Mod.70 w/ 10 X leopold on it.I hand load little 53 grain pills that can shoot a 1 hole 5 shot group  at 100 yds at close to 4000 ft.per sec. and you can cover it with a nickel. It was about the same ballistically as the 220 Swift and the 22-250 took the place of both of the calibers. They are still out there and are an excellent anything gun up to deer. Did I mention it was very accurate and fast! Course .223 is a pretty sweet cal. too![:D]

Let's see. I have a botl action .22 that will take anything from CB's to Long Rifle & hyper-velocity stuff. A .22 Hornet, a .223 and a .22-250. I 'bout got it covered.

All I'm really missing is a .22 CHeetah. [:D]

I'd think .22-250 just because rifles and components should be more readily available.

use .223

Buy a black rifle with a flat-top upper.
get a 10x scope.

How could you post here and expect me to recommend anything else?

My buddies have been pop'n deer on nuisance permits all summer.

Just out of curiosity, what ammo are your friends using to take the deer with?  Just wondering.
