Picked up just over an acre here in an area outside Wasilla. No power run the the area yet, but I am going in and picking up my solar/wind/battery system today. Have started cutting trees, and will be starting dirt work this weekend. Its a nice spot on a bluff that overlooks a lot of vacant land. On a clear day, you can see Denali from where the living room will be.

I'll be posting photos, as things progress and am glad to consider advise from the hive mind, just don't get butt hurt if I do not take it

Just got back from a 5-day land/7-day cruise - beautiful country.

Started in Fairbanks and worked our way south - got on the boat at Whittier and ended up in Vancouver.

You can tell people about the place and show them photos - you just have to see it for your self.

At least it's not a safe thread, or a "my neighbor found a bomb shelter under his patio" thread.

OP did deliver in this thread.  He's just been slow with the updates.

Sorry it took so long, been up to my ass in alligators the last few months.

Anyway for the updates...

Outside....

First, here is a photo of an area I cleared of trees, and leveled. The Silver trailer used to sit alongside here. It gave me a bunch more usable space. I'll finish the berm along the road next summer.

Next, here is the outside of the cabin on the door side. I finished the roof, and got the shingles done. A few small improvements here and there.

And the other side. The crawl space has been closed in. The water line is run to the well and filled in. I also built a new shed for the generator / small shop and buried all the control cables and power cables.

A closeup of the shed. Needs some fine tuning like trim and painting and such. Behind it you can see the trees I cleared from the earlier photo spot. I did not have time to do anything with them, so I just tossed them over the edge with the excavator.

Roof... No longer just Bithuthene. Shingled and remounted the two panels, plus added another on a rack that is hinged at the top so I can angle them more in the summer.

Inside improvements....

Water!!!!!  Here is the pressure tank and water softner in the battery / Utility room.

Next is a box for the microwave and a small oven. I am so happy about getting the oven installed and propane plumbed in. Nice to be able to cook shit.

This is an interesting buy from Amazon. To save my small number of outlets, I got this 110 / USB charger. Fits in a normal wall location, but you can plug two things in as well as 2 USB devices. Very handy.

Next is the area under the ships ladder. Currently an old microwave stand, and a small coffee table here. Next project is to build into the wall under the window a place a person can sit or lay down and read. It will have two rows of storage cubes unter it, and a padded top that reclines on one end. It will go from the oven to the computer desk.

I got rid of the larger sofa, and got a recliner/ love seat. Gives me more room and work s just as well. I also relocated the Toyo stove from angled to flush against the wall.

And another photo of the loft.

Sorry update took so long!

So, you decided against metal on the roof?
The shed looks much nicer than the osb box for the generator.
I bet you are loving that well, much better than dragging the water up from the bar.
Do you just run spikes this time of year, or do they plow that road at all?

Metal roof was gonna cost around $1,200 and I found some good lifetime architectural shingles on Craigslist that would be enough to do the cabin for $250. So, I ran the shingles.

The well is the bomb. Nice to take a shower for as long as I want. And with the on demand propane heater, between the stove and water heater I am using a 100lb can of propane about every 5-6 months.

We get plowed, but usually days after a snowfall, so I run studs.

Outside Wasilla. About 30 miles from town.

If they ever build that damn "Bridge to nowhere" I'll be 19 miles from downtown Anchorage.

Thanks. My little cabin has become a warm, comfortable place to come home to. Saving up for a year or two, and start the house!

Long time follower, first time poster here (in this thread).

Shouldn't you put plastic on your windows?

How much fiberglass insulation is in the walls/ceiling?

I hope I didn't miss that.

Edit --- It's way warmer there than it is here, and will remain so for days to come

Why isn't there a big bore rifle on pegs over a door?  For grizzly bears and wolves and moose and such.

(although you do get points for the cavalry hat and saber!)

6' walls and ceilings. R20 insulation, house wrap and vapor barrier. Tight little cabin. When I smoke, I used to turn on the bathroom vent fan. Stopped doing that when I froze my on demand water heater from cold air coming in the exaust from the air going out the bathroom.

That looks great to me !!!!

I am from rural Appalachia, I would be right at home with the couch on the porch.

If our state College team won a game, they would probably burn it in the road in celebration.

Most couches were safe this year.  That is a great space saving cabin.  I would love to have one in the mountains of my home state.
