It's not what you think, and this should probably be titled how not to disassemble a1911.

This may take a while to type one handed.  I got my first 1911 after more than a dozen years of owning only glocks.  Took it out to the range and it was flawless.  Decided to detail strip and clean it today.  My first time but how hard can it be right?
Tore it down to the frame and was using a punch to remove the pins.  The second pin didn't budge so I cupped the frame in my left hand and pressed down with the punch with my right.  It didn't budge so I really gave it a some pressure.  POP.  OUCH! that hurt like a SOB!  I looked down and had a little round hole in the palm of my hand.

Well that sucked now where is my pin... I look all over and can't find it anywhere.  Then I look at my hand again...  There is a little raised spot in my palm about 1/2 inch from where the hole was.  I gave it a squeeze.  Ouch, Yep, There is my pin.  My wife walked in and started freaking out about taking me to the ER.  I was like wait, let me see if I can pull it out.

   OUCH! OK lets go.

The doc tried to dig it out for 15 minutes, he said he could see where it hit the bone.

Me "oh really is that why it hurst?"

Then he had to cut open my hand to finally get to it.

Tadaa

He was very worried about infection so I was given 4 pills and a shot before I left.  But nothing for pain and it's starting to come unnumb.

So,  anybody have a better way of disassembling a 1911?  I think I need a better method.

ETA.  In response too all the how the heck is that even possible posts.  Here is a pic of how I was holding it.  Between the hammer not being lowered and a stupid hold on the frame, I was able to "Push"  not shoot the pin into my hand.

As to all the questions of why tear it down in the first place?  reason 1 was because I like to know how things work.
When I was about 6 my folks were eating at sizzlers and and looked around and I was gone.  About that time the manager comes up with me in tow and said.  Your son disassembled our drinking fountain and we can't figure out how to put it back together.
I've been that way my whole life and for the most part it serves me well.

reaosn number 2 is because I plan on replacing the trigger, beaver tail and Hammer so I needed to know how to take it down for that anyway.

I posted Follow up pics on Page 5.

No, if it had been a Glock they'd have had to amputate.

I think this might be a first.

I wonder if the doctor still reported it as a gun wound?

Yep...no shit!

OP, just EXACTLY what kind of a "punch" were you using to remove this USUALLY EASY to remove pin?

I would be soaking the crap out of that with warm soapy water on a constant basis until it healed up. You have serious potential for some bad juju there.

Did they force you into a tetanus shot?

Did you finish cleaning it?

I'm sorry but I had to laugh. I've seen a guy with a Barrett extractor in his leg that was blown out from using a suppressor, but this one takes the cake.
The whole pin in your hand?

That pin is a dick. I take it out by standing a disposable chopstick on my coffee table, placing the gun over it with the chopstick pushed into the pin, and then shoving the gun down with body weight.

Ummmm. I think your doing it wrong....

Glad you didn't lose the pin, no don't scratch the frame putting the slide release back in.

According to the Brady campaign, you are now a "victim of gun violence".

And, seriously, you don't need to strip it down that far for a typical cleaning. Even if you did, that pin shouldn't require that much force to remove.

I'll put in the same request. OP: more details, please. I'm trying to grasp how this could have happened.

The only mishap I've ever had cleaning my 1911 was when I sent the recoil spring plug flying right into the TV screen.

Shooting the pin with a .22 is not an acceptable way to remove it.

I've heard of Garand thumb, but 1911 palm is probably going to be a limited use term.

You get extra points for trying, and coming through with pictures though.  There is no doubt that it happened.

Here's to good healing...that's a bummer one there.

OUCH!!!!   Like others have said, HOW IN THE FUCK???    My recommendation to prevent this is to get a scrap piece of wood and drill a hole in it.  Put the gun over said hole in wood and drive pin that way.
