Video: Bystanders pull driver from burning car in Calif.
By FireRescue1 Staff

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. — A group of good Samaritans pulls an unconscious driver from a burning car in a YouTube video posted Monday.

The vintage Ford Model A exploded after it was rear-ended at an intersection in Sherman Oaks, California, on Sunday, according to the user who uploaded the video.

One of the bystanders can be seen using a fire extinguisher on the burning chassis while others brave flames to reach the driver.

YouTube Uploader Description:
A vintage Ford Model A was rear-ended in front of my apartment while waiting at a red light. upon impact the car exploded and ended up on the opposite side of the street. A few good Samaritans rescued the driver while he lies unconscious in the burning vehicle.

Looks like the crumble zone was the gas tank!

I hate to see that vintage car be wasted, though. Hope it can be fixed.

You miss the cloud of dry chemical in the video? At 0:27 seconds the guy discharges what looked like a 5 pounder over the hood area.

32 fords had the gas tank in the rear and when i say rear i mean hanging outthere in the open with nothing but a spreaderbar for protection, prob the reason for the kaboom, all earlier model A's had the tank in the cowl. pitty to see that car go to waste because of a dumbass (on a cell phone prob) hope the driver makes a speedy recovery and good job for the guys smart enough to grab a fire extinguisher

Hopefully the driver was OK.  Hopefully it was a kit car.

Note to self:  Get fire extinguisher for the car.

Follow the trail of gas back to the left, it's off camera.

I kinda figured it was the SUV with the doors open...  And the lady loudly cursing "it was his motherfucking fault" or that's what it sounded like at the end.

Won't do much good for a fuel tank fire.

Unless by 'fire extinguisher' you mean 100lb halon cart....

Didn't you guys in Army Aviation get 30gal. Tri-max CAFS to replace the Halon on the flight line awhile back?

Not for the military. New production was banned(not use) but you can still get 'recycled' Halon 1211. Your gonna pay up the ass though.

Must of hit the guy fairly hard.  I am guessing the gas trail is about how far he went after being hit.
I am also thinking the top was chopped on the car.  Since they did not bust out the window to drag him out.

Still called 'em halon carts/halon bottles... Never paid attention to what was in 'em...

And the bottles in the M1 Abrams fire-suppression system are still very-much Halon...

abrams tanks have halon systems for engine fires. they like to randomly discharge while the tank's being operated.

Halon isn't used anymore. It's mostly FM-200 or even some instances, H20.

Amerex still advertises Halon 1211 carts under their military sales section. Looks like their commercial line is Halotron I & FM-200.
