I've tried Duracoat a couple of times, and even though I followed the instructions I couldn't get it to stick and harden well. I'm assuming it's something wrong with my prep, but if you could detail it out for me that would be awesome. |

Really nice work.
Did you media-blast the frame, cylinder and barrel? If so, what kind of media? If not, why not, and how did you treat all the little scratches and so forth? |

I'm assuming it's something wrong with my prep, but if you could detail it out for me that would be awesome. Prep is real important to this process. First we disassemble the entire gun. 2nd we degrease the entire gun with Lauers TruStrip degreaser 3rd we blast the parts to be coated in the blast media cabinet with aluminum oxide This open the pores of the metal and allows the Duracoat something to grab and lock into. Next the gun goes to the bench to get sprayed. We use an air brush compressor and a higher end air brush gun. (Paasche) It takes a lot of practice to get technique down and distance to the object. If your too close or the pressure is wrong you get a bad result. Too close and you can get drips, runs or over spray. To far and the Duracoat hardens in the air and you get dry spray. If you spray over dry spray it looks like there is dust or sand under the coating. Duracoat is made so it can air dry over night. We put them in the oven for 1 hour at 110 degrees. The next day they are ready to reassemble. |

Wow! as a no talent hack myself I have to say that turned out great! I'll admit, I have a place in my heart for a well worn gun. I think they have character. Never the less, that transformation is stunning. |

I'd still rather see a deep, rich blue or bright polished nickel on an old Colt revolver but it's still a fair refinish.
Neat gun! |

Another restoration.
A customer had this S&W Revolver laying around. The finish appeared to be scraped of with a chisel leaving deep gouges. I filled the gouges using multiple coats of Dura-Fil and some sanding. After all of this I applied 4 coats of HK Black duracoat and a high gloss clear coat.. In your experience, how well does Dura Coat, or any other spray-and-bake product, hold up to turn-lines on the cylinder?

In your experience, how well does Dura Coat, or any other spray-and-bake product, hold up to turn-lines on the cylinder? Drag lines will occur no matter what the finish is. In my experience with the Dura Coat, it holds up pretty well. A couple of days after I coat a gun I could dry fire it and get no drag line. I would say it would be more difficult to get these lines with a dura coat finish than with a factory finish including SS. |

Wow...went from zero to hero with that Colt.
Amazing. HH ETA: talking about the gun, buddy...not you! |

Guns are tools, it doesn't matter if they lose value when you restore them.
I'm in the process of stripping my .45 Luger to duracoat it.

I love this stuff. I have an old 7mm hunting rifle I made over, but never took photos of the before. That snub nose looks great now. You can pick them up for next to nothing at gun shows, I might have to jump on one next time. Thanks for posting. |

Amazing job!

Very nice! I want to get my SLR-95 refinished, I just might have to go with DuraCoat.
