"A sniper with Canada's elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.

Sources say a member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target."

Quite the shot. An entire kilometre further than the previous record.

But my book on sharpshooting and sniping doesn't mention him.

For operational security reasons, sources would not reveal the names of the elite Canadian sniper and his partner, nor the location where the action took place.

It is not without good reason that his name is withheld.  The Brits used to do this after WW II.

He might not even be a great shooter.  At that distance, there is at least as much luck as skill.

I'm sure he was pretty skilled.

"It took under 10 seconds to hit the target."
So has every shot I have ever taken.

Wonder if he used the xm1022 round, or whatever they are calling it these days if it's even still in use.

I have one in my collection and it's a neat looking round

Wrong. Just a little bit of luck goes a long way when you have a metric shit ton of skill.

There is not enough elevation in conventional optic to come close to dialing in 3450 meters of 50 cal drop.

Until we hear what the setup was this is going in the "most likely BS" file.

About every 8 months a Canadian sniper shoots a guy holding a flame thrower, or just about to kill some kids. This smacks of fake news.

The question is repeatability.  The higher it is, the more skilled the individual.  With just one shot, he certainly did his part and the wind cooperated.

Claimed distance can always be challenged, just like the size of the fish that got away.
I'm heading to the King of the 2 Mile shoot at the Whittington Center next week to observe and possibly pick up some pointers to improve my skill level.

What are you talking about? The only other two times I have seen Canadian sniper's in combat make the news was for supporting American troops and other allied soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It briefs well.

And Chris Kyle had 2000 confirmed kills, confirmed by himself.  they were officially in his DD214 that was later redacted due to OPSEC.

I'm willing to bet we have the most 1,000 meter kills, total. This is based on zero data, but a good hunch.
