No question about it....

The crossword puzzle strip with "Yellow-bellied sapsucker" is still one of my favorites.

Growing up my parents often said that my childhood was a lot like the strip. I used to kamakasi down steep hills in my wagon. I was also kinda reflective and observant for a kid. Now that I'm a dad it's cool to see it in my daughter.

He's given interviews?

I thought he pretty much retired to a cabin in the woods and threw all connections to the outside world in the trash can.

Watterson was kinda a artsy fartsy douche, but damn was he brilliant with that strip.

His constant whining about commercialism made him sound like a hippie.

When they start reading well in first and second grade, pull one out and let him read it...

They're still hilarious, just for different reasons.

Sometimes, cartoonists, artist and musicians will "retire" at an early age to get out of a nasty contract.  There is still hope.

I remember a previous C&H thread. One of the members here had a cousin or brother in law that knew that knew Bill's nephew (or some weird connection)  and had been to his home for dinner and/or drinks. He said that Bill stopped the series in the paper but picked up the pen from time to time and that he had written enough to carry on the comic for several years.....

One can only hope.

Best comic ever.

Written and drawn by an amazing man who could put the spirit and the problems of humanity, into the voice of a child.

Why? It was a popular strip I thought. I was under the impression he just ended it because he felt it was time.

Wasn't cheap, but I realized that in the not so distant future books will likely be a thing of the past, gone the way of the walkman. I bought the set because I enjoyed reading them in print, just not quite the same on a monitor.

I have the nice box set as well.

Incredible comic.

My favorite is Calvin on Halloween dressed as a kid who will have to deal with the financial messes left by the previous generation.

And Spaceman Spiff.

And the Transmorgifier.

I can barely read the last page of the last book. I pretty much tear up every time.

No other comic better encapsulated what it was like to be a little boy in the US.

I passed my copies of the comics to my sons and they love them.
